Vivarium Questions :)
Hello!
I was wondering if anyone could help me with vivs! My hog is currently in a Savic zoozone style cage and as nice as it is I'd love a viv - however I'm clueless really where to start
I've got some questions:
1. Do you need a ceramic light bulb, if so how do I use one and where can I get one from?
2. Regards to heat mats, are they any good?
3. Does the light bulb have to be on day and night, or just at night when it's colder?
4. Would a viv measuring 36" long be ok?
5. Using a theromstat, they are easy to use? Even the electric ones?
I'm sure there's more questions
lol I've been looking at the Cool Pets vivarium range and they are really nice, but can't seem to find a picture online of them (I'll have to order one through my work) but is a viv like this one ok? LINK TO VIV
Sorry for so many questions, just I want everything just perfect for my hog baby

Re: Vivarium Questions :)
Firstly welcome to the forum
A viv that is 36" is the smallest you should go, obviously the larger you can go the better for the animal. If you had one with the glass front you would need to add extra vents to it as there is not sufficient in a standard viv for a hog, or you could change them for mesh doors.
The ideal way to heat the viv is by ensuring the room itself is at the correct temperature but I know that isn't always possible.

Re: Vivarium Questions :)
Thank you for the welcomes
I've been looking at the 48" long vivs, would that be ok? I only thought a 36" viv would be ok as it's actually an inch longer than the zoozone I think? I've seen some people make double layers in their vivs, is this easy to do?
Also (again so many questions lol
) If I got a viv I wouldn't need a cermaic light bulb/heater as long as the room temperature was ok? If it got a little chilly would be ok than to just use a heat snugglepad for the winter or would I need more? We're planning to put the viv in the living room, but there's only a small space by a window, would the viv be ok there and keep the possible draft away or not? It wouldn't be right under the windw of course, about 3 foot from it and the window is never left open at night.
I am soo sorry for so many questions! lol want everything perfect
And helllooooo everyone!

Re: Vivarium Questions :)
never apologise for wanting to get ti all right for hoggie! its great that you want to be prepared. as long as the viv is out of direct draughts & sunlight it should be ok. the bigger the better is usually the avice- if it fits & you can afford it get the biggest viv, i have a ZZ2 for my guy. i dont have a a CHE as i have a heat mat & a snugglesafe (neither of which he uses!!) so id check about that- but i do have his mat on all the time to ensure heat is available when its required but has the disadvantage of not evenly distrobuting the heat like a ceramic heater will. hope this helps a bit, im sure somebody with lots more experience will come along soon

Re: Vivarium Questions :)
Hi there
My viv is about 40" long i think.
I have a heat mat under the house in my viv which is linked to a thermostat. You can set the thermostat to a temperature and if the temp drops below that temp (mine is 23-24 degrees c) then it comes on - its very easy to use and i can give you the link to the ones on ebay that some of us on here use.
I dont have central heating in my room as my room is in the attic and i live in an old building, but i do have a portable heater up here which is next to the vivs. However - due to the heat i havent had to use it yet as ive only had my hog since Weds and its been boiling since then.
Also to be on the safe side, you could get a snuggle safe heat pad which is microwaveable for trips to the vets or other emergencies
Hope that helps for now, keep firing the questions =D And welcome to the forum

Re: Vivarium Questions :)
I have 4 foot vivs and as we don't like the house heated at night I bought an advanced heating system. It is a black box you put on the wall at the back of the viv, it has a ceramic heater in it and a built in thermostat (I also have a seperate digital themometer just as back up to check temp). It was just over £80, looks better than the ceramic bulb and worked out cheaper than buying all the bits separetely. I bought it last Nov and has been great.

Re: Vivarium Questions :)
Heya,
I have a 48" long viv which is in the living room and it has a CHE. The only problem with windows being opened during the day etc you would need to be careful of temperature fluctuating too much. The CHE is pretty good and keeps the viv at a nice constant temperature using it in combination with the thermostat. Other people do not like CHE and use a combination of heat pads and oil filled radiators to keep the room warm. Each have their pros and cons it is just about deciding which one is better for you. The thermostat is useful as some have a digital display to show the temperature. As it is summer there is the bigger problem of keeping the viv cool rather than warm so it would be best to probably get a thermometer and measure the temperature differences during the day and night. When it gets closer to winter and temperatures are dropping it will be easier to determine whether you need a CHE or another form of heating. I agree with CJs recommendation regarding a snugglesafe disc as these are very useful if you need to go anywhere which requires heat and last for hours!
It depends on where you are getting your vivarium from. Brandygirl69 makes them and will be able to put in an extra level if needed. Good thing about buying a customised viv is that you can get it to the right size to fit the area wanted. As for extra levels, I used a ferplast bunny house in combination with a wooden platform to make my two levels.
Sorry for the random thought patterns, things crop into my head as I am typing!

Re: Vivarium Questions :)
welcome to the forum,
i have my hog housed in a 3ft by 2ft by 2ft with glass doors whish has 10 vents all along along the back to ensure a good amount of ventilation. to heat the viv i use the flexi33 pet bed heat pad attached to a habistat temperature thermostat set at 24 c this keeps the viv at the correct temps always so i have no worries about her getting cold i also have the snuggle safe heat pad for the colder months incase its needed. my higs viv is kept next to a window i never have any problems with draft however the summer has been extra hot this yea so i have had to turn the temps down a little so that she doesnt overheat. as long as you keep an eye on temps with a digi thermometer you shouldnt have any probs there. hope i have helped in any way

Re: Vivarium Questions :)
I have never seen one of these heat mats so I apologise if my question is stupid.
If you have a glass front viv and the heat mat is inside the viv, where do you put the wire to plug it in?
ALso, is it similar to an electric blanket because those are a fire hazard.

Re: Vivarium Questions :)
Thank you for all the ideas and advise everyone, your all so reaaally nice
I've looked into the space his viv would be and it's 42" which is impossible to find a viv to fit
so wondering would a viv that measures:
36inches (3ft) long x 20 inches tall x 19 inches depth/width ... but ok?
I've been making him a house he can climb on top off (with safety ledges on the top and down the ladder
) so he'll get some climbing exercise, also he's out a lot of the evening, normal 2-3 hours a night and I let him have a adventure playground in the bath sometimes so he's only ever really sleeping in his cage

Re: Vivarium Questions :)
you could get one made to measure to fit the gap exactly, the deeper viv would be the bestter as it would allow for more floor space
