Anyone use bedmax? Review and opinions URGENTLY needed!!
I have just opened my 25kg bale of bedmax (and huge it is). Bedmax is said to be used for horses 'made specially for horses' and it has been approved by her majesty the queen.
It says on the bale that it has been manufactured from renewable UK forestry timber, cut to a specific size, screened to virtually eliminate dust and dried to create an ideal bedding.
I know Fuz4ever on here uses it for her ratties along with a few other people but I was wondering what people's opinions of it are for hedgies?
I have just put some in with Cheiku and he seems to love it burying away.
My only concerns are -- the 'slices' of shavings are much larger than normal shavings however it is still just as soft to the touch - could this be good or bad?
When I sifted through it in Cheiku's viv it did have A FEW thicker more woody pieces of shaving still the same size though - I took them out incase; a worry?
Also, it is dust free - VERY dust free, however there is a kind of grainy substance which I can only guess is from where they have dried the timber - could this cause problems?
I emailed the bedmax people and told them what I was intending on doing with it. They said they had never heared of African Pygmy Hedgehog's using it before but didn't know a great deal about exotics. They did however say a number of their customers use it for their rats/hamsters/rabbits and guinea pigs as well as horses all of whom they are aware are suseptable to repiratory infections. They told me if this was an issue is APH that I shouldn't have a worry.
Hmmm...
Here are some pictures to give a better idea if at all possible...
The bedmax is the far left - finacard - normal shavings:

Closeup of bedmax, as you can see the little dotty black debris???

So yeah, I am going to put all my hoggies on it for today/tonight -- suck it and see I guess. If anyone thinks I should take them straight off of it (because of concerns) let me know and I will right away (I always worry I'm missing a defying factor you guys could've spotted).
Thankssssssss

well rats have sticky out eyes like APH really
Is it soft to touch? I must admit I would be tempted to crumble it a bit and would take out the thicker pieces like you have done
If its marketed at dust free then I cant imagine the crumbly bits on it being much of a problem
WOW it must be a mahoosive bag!!!!

Re: Anyone use bedmax? Review and opinions URGENTLY needed!!
CJ it is about £14 with delivery. It's crazy how big it is and crammed in. I had to use my Dad's stairlift to get it upstairs.
I a'int no superman.
AA -- It's rougher than normal shavings but still pretty soft. I would rate it somewhere between normal shavings and good quality aspen (not that I am likening it to aspen).
I will see how they go on it for tonight and tomorrow. If by this time tomorrow there's any problems it's coming out.
I wonder if I could use it for Quinn too ------ hmmmmmmmmm

My advice would be to take it up shard by shard... piece by piece... bit by bit... one by one... strip by...
