Best litter to use?

Post  TallulahFluffyHedgepig on October 15th 2010, 11:32 am

Hi everyone,
I had planned on using finacard in Twiglets litter tray, but when i picked her up she had chinchilla sand, so i got some of that to start off with as it's what she is used to. Now this is working out well and is really easy to sift through each morning meaning i have hardly had to waste any at all - down side is in the morning her cage looks like its been hit by a sand storm wub

I do like the fact that the chin sand stops her walking poop etc round though!

What do you all use and how does it work out on a cleaning out/convenience scale?

I use kitchen roll - really easy and non messy I find just not very environmentally friendly really - I like chin sand for the play pens but all find make one heck of a mess with it!!

I got on really well with Finacard.

I haven't tried chinchilla sand as it looks too messy.

Tried some Megazorb I needed to use up bit it didn't agree with the heat in the viv and stunk after a couple of days and also was very messy

I'm currently using kitchen roll on an upside down litter tray for my Twiglet as this stops her annoying habit of burrowing under her wheel and waking us up. Very quick to change and cheap and easy to use.

I vote kitchen roll or Finacard

I used to use chinchilla sand then i changed over to dust free aborbent cat litter (Shophisticat). Chincilla sand was basically the same, the only problem was the expense £5 for a box equivalent to the size of a small milk carton and that didnt last very long at all. You get cat litter in much bigger quantities for the same price. I was using newspaper and kitchen roll for a while but i found when hog was running in wheel at night and poopin'/peein' you could actually smell it quite strongly...lol lol!

I use Chinchilla sand in my litter tray. The poo becomes covered in the sand, and I think that stops the smell. Each morning, I remove wheel, and use a cat litter scoop to run through the sand and I can easily remove the lumpy objects. I do not replace the sand as so little is removed. I then replace sand completely at the weekend.

I don't notice there is much mess with it, sometimes a little across the floor of the cage, but not much

I am however selective where I buy my sand. Corner petshops charge loads for tiny little bags, but Pets at home do a reasonable size sack for just £4

My vote goes to sand

My vote goes to Chinchilla Sand too. I don't fill the tray very full so mess is minimal and it definately keeps the smell down! I found with kitchen roll it got trampled alot on their feet PLUS the really best thing is.......... oh my god do mine like to roll in it!!! big smile

I buy a huge sack of Ebay (size of a big compost bag!), if thats any help, the price was very reasonable and its lasting ages. I found it was so expensive to buy small boxes or bags of it.

Can I just check that you are using the sand/cat litter etc in the tray under the wheel and then you use something else for the rest of the cage/viv? I was thinking of chin sand or similar for the litter tray and using a fleece covering for the rest of the viv. Will that be OK? I just so want to get this right. wacko

I use kitchen towel in her litter tray as it is quick and easy to clean and cheap too. I use to use a cat litter but prefer the kitchen roll. cool
