Does anyone else's hog refuse to use hedgie bags???
I'm a bit up the wall with Odysseus on this issue. He used to use hedgie bags when I first got him, and though he'd dig them a bit inside, he would sleep in them. In the very warm summer months i would put paper in his igloo without the hedgie bag, as he would be getting too hot in there. Since i started putting hedgie bags back in, and this has been for some time now, he has been refusing to sleep in them. I find him sleeping on top. I have resorted to putting one hedgie bag above and one below, so he at least sleeps between the two. Even then i come down in the morning to find him on top of the top hedgie bag. When I clean him out and put a new one in and open it up and put a bit of the shredded paper stuff in to coax him in he goes in and out, and in and out, gives me a look like I've asked him to sleep on a bed of nails, frets and huffs and then pulls the bag down and squeezes himself on top. Last time I changed the bag and put a new one in I also added a sort of tunnel of material in front, like a hedgie bag without the end sewn to make a bag if you see what I mean, to extend the bag and turned the ends of that over the front entrance to the igloo, so there was no way he could pull it down...or so i thought......he stuck his head in, came out, went up the ramp to the shelf, came back down, stuck his head in again, came out, gave me the 'how could you do this?' look, looked in, came out, went up the ramp, and then tried to pull the front bit down. He ended up squeezing underneith, and thought he'd outwitted me, but he ended up back in the hedgie bag. He stayed there, apparently unhappy, but too tired to fight any longer, and the next morning I found him on top of the hedgie bag in the igloo, and the tunnel bit strewn around the front of the igloo. I'm worried about the weather now, and winter approaching. I have a room heater on a thermistat at the moment, near his cage, with sensor jsut in the cage, so it keeps the temperature around him and inside around 23-24 degrees, but I worry about anyting happening at night, like the electric going off or anything like that, and him being outside his hedgie bag and getting cold. (I'm still waiting to hear from the guy who was supposed to be building my viv, which I have a heatlamp/ CHE for). I put a heatpad under the cage too, so I suppose he could be getting too warm, but the heat pads cool in the night and he does worry me. I'm maybe being a bit paranoid, but can't help it really. I just wondered if anyone else's hog refuses to sleep in a bag and anyone can suggest something I could do to coax him back into one....you should see the look i get when I clean him out and put him back in and he sees I've tried to make him go through the igloo door to the bag.!!!! i suppose if I had the viv done, and heat lamp, he could just have the hedgie bag in there and i could see if he'll sleep in it, but I'm worried at the moment that he might not sleep in it, and would not even have the igloo around him to keep any draughts away. Hedgies!

this may seem weird, but have you tried turning the hedgie bag inside out? When Pearl got a hedgie bag she was the same, I turned it inside out and she went inside, think she just didnt like fleece (freak!) then after a bit I turned it the right way and she just used it normal.

haha, at least I know I'm not alone!
Thanks for the advice, you know I never even thought of turning them inside out. I think I was so worried about them not being warm enough, but he'd be less warm outside anyway, and you're right it probably is the fleece. i think he has a problem with fleece. The little bugger. I'll try inside out the one that has a none fleece outside, the others are all fleece, but hopfully the none fleece outer one might convince him, as I'll try your trick of changing it back later and hoping he won't notice. =) Anything to avoid those looks of hurt and betrayal!

aww, little hedgie bed!
I'll give the fleece squares a go. Knowing Ody he'll end up on top of them all, but I'll put quite a few in and hopefully he'll find himself a bed of his own liking.
Thanks loads again!

The hedgie war continues!
I cleaned Ody out last night, and turned his bed inside out. I put the fleece tunnel in the front of the igloo so that he'd have to go through into the bag and would see that it was not fleece inside. He ummed and ahhhed for a bit, head in, head out, then went in and gave me the 'this isn't over!' look before curling up in there! I thought I'd cracked it...i was practically celebrating! He stayed for the evening in there. I got up this morning, came down to check and low and behold the hedgie bag had been squashed down and he was between the two....lying on top of the one he was supposed to be inside! Aggghhh!!!!! Hedgie war!!!! They don't play fair!

If he likes to lie between them what about using a smaller version of a liner so it is like a blanket?
Perhaps he doesn't like the enclosed sides a pouch provides. A bit like me not liking the duvet tucked under my feet while the OH insists on it!

Re: Does anyone else's hog refuse to use hedgie bags???
i think you might be right. I may have a slightly claustrophobic hog!
He seems fine on the couch between the cushions...after some chewing and moving them about. I think a duvet is the way to go.....a hog style duvet of squares of material of course! He goes on top of the lot most of the time, I've managed to get a stalemate by adding a hedgie bag stuffed into the top of the igloo, for him to have something above him when he pushes the bottom one down. half the time I find him on top of the lot in the morning, and then have to shove him off...gently of course...and put it over him again so he's got some covering of warmth. usually having to avoid a nip of disgust! Maybe if i make some cotton tunnels and stuff them a bit with shredded paper to make them tunnel like and see if he'll accept that. Maybe a small cushion type of construction on the bottom...and maybe he doesn't like the heat from the heat pad and it's a bit too warm in there. I've tried moving it slightly away from the igloo area, but want to keep some of that area warmer, as he's asleep there, and not often with covering due to all this. not ideal warmth in a cotton tunnel, and he has a habit of chucking out shredded paper when I put it in, but at least he won't be totally exposed to the air. I think sometimes he just likes being awkward, to give me something to do!

I wish ody would at least sleep under his bag. At least then I'd know he had something over him. Oh well, good to know I'm not the onlyt one with an awkward little bugger! Heehee
