Ceramic heater in vivarium
Hello,
Am moving my hog from a zoozone to a vivarium and have a quick question about heating. My boy lives in my bedroom and temperature has never been a problem so far (although I do have a snugglesafe and heat mat just to be safe) but I know vivariums can trap cold air so want to use a ceramic heat lamp.
Does anyone use ceramic heat lamps? If so what wattage lamps do you use and with which thermostat? Have had a look at some habistats but not sure which. Is a dimmer one better or is an on/off one sufficient. The vivarium has two levels and each level will be 3ft x 15 inches x 15 inches.
Thanks,
Helen

i do, and I use a pulsing thermostat, but only for one hog who tends to be a bit funny with temps. Not sure what wattage, I dont think it matters too much as the stat controls it, bigger the bulb faster it heats up (I think)

We have a 250W bulb for that exact reason!
It is pretty good at keeping the temperatures stable and I have one in each viv. I use a thermostat to help regulate the temperature.
I also have a cage/guard around the bulb to prevent myself from being burnt.

I took Emily's advice and got two 250 watt che bulbs and holder and thermostat for Ody for his new viv, all from ebay. Not got the viv yet, but hopefully they'll ensure he's nice and cosy in his new home.

Dont forget a heat reflector to reflect the heat down, so as not to waste any
Play around with where your bulb is, I find for the APHs slightly off centre for the bulb & the sensor & thermometer where hedgies bed is works best as you dont need a hot spot your aiming to keep the whole place warm.
