Is this cage suitable for a hedgehog?
This is the cage I have for Oscar. Is it suitable or does anything need to be done to make it Hedgehog proof?

My rescue girls Hilda and Heidi came in something very similar to that and lived in it fine until I got their viv. My rescue boy Quinn is currently living in it until the weekend - yet another new viv. You might want to keep an eye to make sure your hog doesn't climb, if so you may want to put something up to cover most of the slits in the plastic.
Hope this helps

Re: Is this cage suitable for a hedgehog?
Personally I wouldn't use a cage like this at all... There are far too many gaps and bars for little noses/paws to get caught up in.
The best thing would be to look into getting a ZooZone2 which are much more suitable...
http://www.equipetable.co.uk/hagen-zoozone-2-large-free-delivery.html
Failing that, look into putting cardboard/perspex ALL around the gaps leaving only the bars on top free for ventillation.
How does it measure up?

Re: Is this cage suitable for a hedgehog?
i dont think theres anything particularly wrong with this cage, ive seen these myself and heidi and hilda came in one of those.
the gaps around the side are fairly wide so no noses would get caught and its quite hard for them to reach the roof especially if you remove the house and replace it with something lower.
having said that it is difficult to fit a wheel in, the only one suitable really is the flying saucer and they take alot of room up in it and if you have a bigger hog they arent really suitable.
if i had a choice i would choose the zoozone 2 or a viv.

Re: Is this cage suitable for a hedgehog?
I was thinking of getting him a flying saucer anyway so thats not really an issue
What if i were to stretch a sheet of fleece cut to side over the holes on the side of the cage to block them off? Would that make it safer for him?
I am hoping to get him a lower house when I get paid so the top bars should be ok left as they are when I get that
For the time being I have put some books on top of the cage so that he cant poke anything through the bars and have covered the holes at the side of the cage with cardboard. It looks a bit scruffy though so thats why I was thinking of using fleece, do you think it would be ok?

Re: Is this cage suitable for a hedgehog?
hmmm.... i think the gaps between the wires are unsutible, too big. It is also seems (just my opinion) i little to small. Oh and he will need a wheel
i reccomend either the medium or large Zoo Zone

this cage is actually bigger than the largest zoozone
the medium zoozone is nowhere nea big enough for a hog

Re: Is this cage suitable for a hedgehog?
When we first got Puck he lived in a smaller one of these. I took out a few of the bars on the top to allow for a silent spinner and he slept in pouches or under his liner instead of the house. He was ok in this while he was small and he is a lazymajig so we didn't have an issue with him climbing. He now lives in a converted TV cabinet and our other hedgehog, River, lives in a viv. We keep this around in case we need to take on a temporary rescue or need to seperate our guinea pigs for some reason.
I think the one you have shown has as much floor space as a large zoo zone, it certainly has much more than a medium zoo zone. Blocking the side gaps is a good idea in case they do like to climb. Although the bars look great for ventilation I think with such a large area and the angled front they can be susceptible to drafts, depending on the room and positioning. So think carefully how you are going to keep him nice and warm. Have a read of some of the other threads on here regarding heat pads and hibernation.
As I am sure you will be doing, you'll have to keep an eye on him and if anything looks like it could be an issue either modify or consider finding something else. I have to agree with what others have already said, a zoo zone or viv would be my preference.

Just backing up what hedgebottom has said, medium zz's are WAY too small...
And I think pinktink has blocked off all of the reachable gaps now and has done a wonderful job

Re: Is this cage suitable for a hedgehog?
Thank you Lexxiesmith, I have blocked all of the gaps round the edge off now, thank you for saying I've done a good job
Mr Hobbit - I have researched hibernation and heatpads and have placed my cage in an area away from drafts, direct sun light and it is on an internal wall as oppose to an external one as I know that the external walls are colder for hedgies
He is also kept away from windows as these are particularly drafty places
My central heating is set to turn on when the temperature drops to 22oC and he has a snugglesafe heat pad in his house which I am finding more than adequate at the moment as the room is always kept warm anyway. Just dont want you thinking I havent done my research because I have

Re: Is this cage suitable for a hedgehog?
I have seen that too, when I was first researching getting a hog some places claim a hog only needs 2 sq feet of floor space!!
or that stuff like this

is fine... this is far too small, that poor hog cant do anything in there.
thats why I always stick with the info on here as there are so many experienced owners and breeders here
