smelly mealworms!
hiya....
iv always fed my hog dried mealworms and purchased a tub of live mealworms about 4/5 weeks ago... i fed them weetabix to start with, then i found out you could give them fruit and veg so started to give them bits of apple ect, thing is they started to stink putrid after that, i removed all the leftover bits from the tub they didnt eat but they just stank awful so i put the remainders out for the birds.
is it normal that they smell????

Re: smelly mealworms!
I used to use weetabix and I think it smells worse so I changed to oats :p
I keep my worms on oats and nothing else - if breeding them it slows down the productivity of the worms but I still get enough for my hoggies. I then have a separate smaller tub for my feeding worms. I add veg etc before i feed to hogs so all the worms are then eaten so I dont get soggy worm smell

Re: smelly mealworms!
so......can i use porridge oats then in future?
i felt the smell didnt start with the weetabix though, just the fresh stuff. it did smell a bit like rotting veg, but im sure i got all the uneaten oddments out. it really was vile though!

Re: smelly mealworms!
well I found that oats was cheaper and easier and doesnt seem to smell like the weetabix does with the veg
