quill loss and dry skin
Hi
I recently got my first hedgie who is 6 weeks old and he has just started to lose his quills. They all have the little ball on the end and so initially I was not worried as this is normal for his age, but he has started to get dry and flaky skin and in places the quills seem to not be growing back but this is only noticeable when he balls up. In general he is a very happy hedgehog and eats is food and drinks regularly, he does not seem to be scratching, his eyes and nose are healthy and his ears are not ragged. Do you recommend giving him an oatmeal bath and increasing his fatty acids and see if his skin improves within a week or so, or the other option is taking him straight to the vet as I am worried that he could have mites or an infection. The reason I am debating this is because I only recently got him and want to minimise stress as I'm sure no hedgie enjoys vet visits!
Any advice would be much appreciated

Re: quill loss and dry skin
I can't say for sure what is causing the dry skin, but I know my little boy Ody has pretty dry skin, and as I'm pretty sure he does not have mites, I've been advised in the past to try a little vitamin e oil on him, which does seem to help a bit. Oatmeal or aveeno oil baths are good too, but obviously with the cold weather I'm personally reluctant to bathe him. Also I've been advised to put a little virgin olive oil on his food. I'm sure someone with more experience willbe along soon to give better advice, but provided you can be sure it's not caused by mites, they are treatments that I've tried. Though nothing has rid Ody of his dry skin, it is kept in check a bit with these.

Re: quill loss and dry skin
thank you
i'm hoping it's dry skin and not mites or anything! Because I am a new owner I have never encountered mites before but I have read that the lost quills usually do not have the balls on the end if it is mites and Captain's definitely do! but I thought I should check just in case...
I will try the vitamin e and keep a close eye on him, I think if it gets any worse I will take him to the vet, although it's bad timing because of xmas and the snow!!

Re: quill loss and dry skin
as he is just 6 weeks old he is probably going through a quilling and I do find that their skin does go a little dry during this time - coupled with our heating which has a bit of a drying effect - I would be inclined to think that it is nothing sinister at all and your little one should be just fine

delilah is 13 weeks old (today) and is quilling like never before and i noticed her skin is very dry have been keeping an eye on it and used a bit of vit e oil on her (she even had peeling/dry skin on her nose at the weekend) she is also scratching and when she does you can see the quills falling out !!! i hope it passes soon it doesn't seem to be bothering her at the moment but i don't want it to start affecting her

Re: quill loss and dry skin
yeah captain was losing quite a few last night and was understandably a bit grouchy but a few mealies cheered him up pretty quickly!
i've been using vit e as well! but it's too early to tell if it is helping him yet!
Happy Birthday delilah
and hope her skin improves!
xx

Re: quill loss and dry skin
a little tip when i have delilah out she is very snuggly so i sitt with her on my lap and a bit of fleece under her and i brush her with a tooth brush and she loves it, it helps get rid of any loose quills and also when i put the vit e on it helps spread it around (if you know what i mean) remember tho don't use the oil to often as that can cause problems too
