ear cleaning?

Post  robstaine on January 1st 2011, 9:19 pm

I was taking a few pictures today and noticed her ears were waxy...

Now my question is.. how do you clean a hedgehogs ears when every time I go near her face she moves away or goes into a ball?

Also how often do you bath them?

Mine get very dirty feet and under belly.

I've never bathed my hogs ears and wouldn't recommend doing so.

You may end up doing more harm than good. Unless it's vital, I would just leave it be. Hogs have quite shiny inner ears anyway lol!

I didnt mean to bath her ears lol I meant to bath her in general as she gets very dirty paws.

Her ears seemed quite waxy with brownish wax.

I only wash their feet if they're basically wearing a boot made of poo lol!

Normally you can just gently scrape the poo off with some paper towel.

hogs should be bathed only if absolutely necessary because it strips the skin of its natural oils and can make it dry and flaky - foot baths can be given when their feet are really caked

when you say the ears are waxy do you mean inside the ear or crusty on the tips? If you mean the inner ear can you get a piccie to show us what you mean? Please dont put cotton buds or anything into her ears as if could cause a problem if the tips of her ears are a little raggety you can rub some pure vit e oil between your finger tips and then rub them along the top of her ears to help if you can get near them - never get an liquids into the ear itself because it can cause ear infections

Its a bit hard to tell from this picture but when it is bigger on my computer you can see it better.

well its not irritating her then anyway - I would leave it on its own tbh - if it is wax its likely to come out on its own if she scratches and then shakes her head - take her to the vet if she starts head tilting or if its foul smelling or yellow and gunky or something like that - dont put anything into her ears to try and shift it

Vitamin e like aa said or olive oil on the back of the ears (only a few drops) will work wonders

you don't need to bath a hedgehog very often. I used to bath one of my boys and got into lots of problems with dry skin.
I find poo will drop off the feet because I use chinchilla sand in the tray below the wheels

I was told by the breeder that it was ok to bath her as she had really sore red skin and she gave me the name of some oat based bath cream thats meant to be good for their skin.
