Room thermometer?

Post  Kiania on February 3rd 2011, 8:30 am

I'm looking to get a thermometer, firstly to stick to the wall where I'm planning to put the enclosure (to see temp fluctuations for working out exactly how cold it gets, and how warm it stays!), and then to use for checking on the hog.

Therefore, I'm looking for one that'll store the min/max temperature over the day/night, but also one that has an alarm (so that if it drops suddenly overnight - power outage affecting heat mats, or so forth, then it'll give me some warning!).

I found a couple on ebay that seems to fit the bill ( http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Indoor-Outdoor-Digital-Thermometer-2-Sensors-Alarm-NEW-/300519597515?pt=UK_Kitchen_Accessories&hash=item45f85d25cb or http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/INDOOR-OUTDOOR-DIGITAL-THERMOMETER-2-SENSOR-ALARM-/250748482317?pt=UK_Gadgets&hash=item3a61c6330d ), but was wondering if anyone had any recommendations that they have tried and found to be accurate?

I'm also getting a tank strip for the future, so I can measure the ZZ temp, as well as the room temp. But right now, trying to find one that'll do the room temperature accurately!

Thanks Smile (also, know this isn't technically 'enrichment', but this was the closest forum part I could find!).

I was going to slap on a tank-strip as well, but right now, need to know the temperature at night, and while I'm unemployed, I'm not thinking the OH will be terribly impressed if I kept getting up in the middle of the night to check it!

I'm slightly worried that the accuracy is +/- 1 degree C, but I'm going on the assumption that if it stays around 22-24 degrees during the night (coldest time), then, even if it is 1 degree out, it is still over 20! I spent some time browsing Amazon last night, but the ones (everything under £20) on there had reviews saying that they were 4 or even 5 degrees out of accuracy - that is insane! And entirely impractical for this :(

Just wondering if anyone had already tried something similar, and had found the perfect, accurate thermometer. Cheaper the better, and all that, but if it is more accurate, I'd be happy to spend a little more!

+/- 1 degree is the best you'll get. No thermometer will measure more accurately than that.

I have the second thermometer you linked and I find it works well! Both of those thermometers you linked look the same apart from slight change in appearance and price so they will probs be the same sort of accuracy. I got one of these because it stored min/max temp so I could see how cold it gets during the day or night when I am not around and adjust the thermostat on the oil radiator accordingly. It will also beep 3 times if the temperature goes above/below the temperature you specify although it isn't a loud beep which is good for the hedgy as they will not be disturbed too much, but not so good for me hearing it!

I also have 2 mercury thermometers, one is a fridge magnet I had and the other is a room thermometer from Robert Dyas. My digital thermometer seems to be pretty accurate according to my other 2 mercury thermometers.

Excellent! The second one is the one I ended up buying as well - huzzah!

I'll bare in mind that it is a quiet beep. Thankfully my other half is a light sleeper (his alarm clock has never woken me up), so he might hear it.

But yes, the min/max recording function was the main reason, gives me a chance to see what needs to be done to keep it at hoggie-temp!

Thanks for the reply, always good to have a review to go by Smile

I have a thermometer in the viv and one in the room. I have not done the measurements like you do but now looking at Neo I can see that 23 its too much for him!
he does have a mat which goes on at night but he tends to get the pouch as far away from the heat source as possible! or sleeps in the far corner of his viv without the pouch.
the temp in the room is normal room temperature for humans, sometimes higher like 25 when we home and the TV is on and the computers.
Neo lives in our study and I think is very happy, relaxed hog Laughing

My OH bought a weather station which logs temperature, humidity, rain etc. When we were planning on going away on holiday in the caravan we put the weather station in there to see how the temps were during the day. Gave a good indication and he also streamed the information on the Internet so you could view it whenever you wanted. A bit extreme though!

I would really like a thermometer that connected to the internet and that I could access on my smart phone! And remotely adjust my oil radiators thermostat. And I would also like my lamp timer to display when it is on and off!
