Advice please - flakey skin/scabs
Hello Everyone,
I was wondering if someone could give me some advice.
I have a baby hog who will be 10 weeks old this weekend. Ever since I bought him home three weeks ago he has been scratching like mad. He's been quilling the last couple of weeks so I havent been two worried about him scratching at his spines, however the last couple of days i've noticed on his belly it feels as if he has a couple of hard/scabby areas. It also looks as if he may have pulled a chunk (albeit very small) of his furr out in that region. What should I do? Should I take him to the vets to make sure he doesnt have any parasites? Is there something i can put on him to stop him scratching? I've turned the heating down in my room as I read somewhere it can irritate them - is there anything else (other than the quilling) that will cause him to scratch so much?
I've also noticed a tiny little pimple like bump on his chin, it's only very small but looks like it might be an ingrown hair. My previous hog had an op on his head because he had a growth that as it turned out was caused by a fungal infection caused by an ingrown spine. Should I be worried about this given it is a very very small bump at the moment?

the bump under his chin is completely normal - its their wart! no idea what its there for but every hedgie has it!
can you see the bumpy areas on his belly? Is it in his fur? It could be 'boy stuff'
with regards to his skin - its probably down to quilling to giving him an aveeno bath or equivalent might help soothe his skin and if you put him on some black fabric and ruffle his quills - if anything drops off him and moves then he has mites but chances are at the moment its just down to him quilling - you can get burrowing mites also but at his age is commonly quilling

Re: Advice please - flakey skin/scabs
Thanks aa!
The bumps are in his fur but are further up than his bits - more in the chest area by his front legs. It's difficult to see as everytime I turn him upside down he balls up - but what I assume to be the dry/scabby areas feels a bit like he's got glue or something matted in his fur.
I take it the Aveeno bath powder is best for hedgies?

the 'gluey' feeling bits matted in his fur are more than likely to be boy activity!!I use the aveeno bath oil - I'm not sure about the powder - I imagine its all pretty much the same though? another way to do it is to run oatmeal through some tights til the water goes cloudy

I was shocked when I first saw Ody doint it. I honestly thought he'd chewed his own foot off...then I remembered he didn't have a fifth leg!

Hee hee I feel rather silly now for thinking it was hard skin. I've noticed he's also got it over his lovely clean baby blanket. Messy hog - he's going in the tub for a soak tonight, he's going to love that!

Re: Advice please - flakey skin/scabs
Well Frankie seems to be getting worse with his 'man stuff' in recent weeks. Teenagers! He had it all in his cheek fluff last week, it looked horrible so he had to go in the sink for a soak to soften up it up so I could get it out - what a nightmare it is, worse than getting chewing gum out of hair.
And I got him out last night and low and behold he's got it all over the other side of his face now. The stuff is rock hard too I can't even break it down by trying to crack it between my nails. He absolutely hates water and climbs up my arm while I'm trying to bath him and I dont want to dry his poor skin out as he likes a scratch already - any tips on how the get the stuff out? I'm starting to wonder if babies would be easier that keeping the little messer clean

Re: Advice please - flakey skin/scabs
its really hard to get off
i think anything you try its still not going to get it off properly.
it loosens after a while and drops off as far as i know.
