Mite help please

Post  gem400 on February 10th 2011, 5:05 pm

I checked on my hogs when I got in from work, Thistle wasn't her usual friendly self and was a little pricklebag, I noticed white mites crawling on her face, no wonder she was so grumpy sad I thought I'd seen a couple of white spots on her face before but they didn't move and her skin is a bit dry so thought it was just dry skin, they disappeared so didn't think too much of it. I can't see any on my other 2 hogs but wouldn't rule out they have them. I keep them on paper so can't have picked them up from sawdusk etc. All my hogs are just over 5 months old.
As I work nights my dad offered to pick up some treatment, I'd scanned the site and saw some people used the beaphar spot on so asked him to bring me this, he's come back with bob martin spot on...gggrrrr, but I don't want to use it if it will be ineffective.

Any advice woud be great

Cheers
Gemma

The bob martin 'my little friend' lists the active ingredients as S-methoprene 3% and Ethyl butylacetylaminopropionate, says will repel flies, fleas, ticks, lice and surface mites.

I think the mites on my hog are burrowing mites so I'm not convinced it will be effective.

I wouldnt use Bob Martin. When my vet asked what i first used on holly (bob martin) he strongly reccomended not to use that as its ineffective and basicly just a money maker made of crap. I then went online to look at reviews etc....my god....some of the things i read...i was shocked. I wouldnt think about picking it up again.

Still havent persuaded my mum to stop using it with Mitzie though, set in her ways! PAH!

Just what I was thinking, I wouldn't use bob martin on my dogs, I've heard through my work of people using it on dogs and cats and it being ineffective so use frontline on my dogs. Looks like I'll be taking it back and getting something that might actually work. Cheers for the advice so far Smile

Hi, I have treated all of my adults and babies with INVERMECTIN DROPS 0.1%. Spot On Anti Parasite Mite Treatment. ( that for small birds ) If remember well it is one drop behind head for 60gr. body weight, so adults needed a few drops. I bought 10ml bottle, paid around £ 22, so was enough for all babies and adults. Mites never came back. I bought from ebay from PHARMAQ Ltd, but you will find a few companys selling that.

ivermectin is possibly a problem in injectable form probably because the margin for overdose is quite small - theres been some hedgie deaths in USA from it so they are a bit wary of it - but its the active ingredient in Xeno mini 50's also and thats ok in topical form - again as long as dosage is adhered to (which is the same for any medication really - things we use like metacam has a small margin for error in dosaging also) my vet prescribes topical ivermectin for mite treatment and all of mine have had it with no problems

Sound like a cheyletiella mite, does it look like walking dandruff? Xena mini 50 will definitely do the trick. Never use bob martins it really bad stuff, can be potentially life threatening to cats, would hate to think what it would do to little hogs.

Cheers everyone, I ended up using beaphar spot on for small animals as it contains ivermectin and could buy it from the pet shop. It seems to have done the trick but will be repeating the treatment after 4 weeks to be sure. Their skin is still a litte dry but I'm hoping it will start to improve now the mites have gone.
