Post  robstaine on February 11th 2011, 7:30 am

Any foods that can help stop smelly poo?

My hogs poo smells reallllyyyyy bad, even if its a small drops it fills the whole room..

Any types of foods that I can feel to help reduce the smell?
What types of cat biscuit brands?

Well, what are you already feeding your hog?

I have heard that adding go kat to the mix can help poo smells (must be with other brands though as its not very nutritional alone)

She gets fed on hill's science plan optimal care chicken flavour.
She occassionally gets scambled egg, ham and frankerter as thats all she will eat.
She eats a few dry meal worms a day but I have only started her on that.

Whats frankerter may i ask? Lol.

The brands i use are hills scence plan, purina one, pets at home light, and go kat and i have no smelly issues? Even when he gets egg, chicken, mealworms or mince theres not really a strong smell when he poops that i notice.

Maybe if you mix in another 2 or 3 brands then the smell might subside a little bit?

Oh right lol. I think james well beloved would be alright i think there are a few people that add that to their mix.

Im sure someone else will pop along with some more suggestions/advice, i dont think that ham/saugsages (processed foods in general) are reccomended for hogs, im guessing that would probably be adding to the smell probably more than the food lol

I would be careful with ham or rankfurters as they often add salt and stuff to them

have you tried any of these things ? (mine love them all)

chicken
turkey
carrot
swede
potato
strawberry
apple
pear
mango
scrambled egg
beef and pork without fat

most of mine love all those

Yep I tried and she doesnt seem to fussed about any of them apart from scrambled egg and she will also eat banana but real meat she will nibble but leave most of it.

she is very messy too poos all around her litter , in her litter and her wheel. I have had to put newspaper all around her litter as messes everywhere and would mess on the blanket that I use as her flooring.

The science plan optimal care is way too high in fat to be fed on its own. Its 20% fat what!! , no wonder you are having weight issues with your hog. You need science plan adult light which is 8% fat. I would also recommend mixing in one or 2 other biscuits into a mix. James wellbeloved is fine but make sure you use the senior/light version and not fish flavoured ones. Go cat indoor is supposed to reduce poo odor.
You can also add a bit of the optimal care to use it up but if she is on a diet I would probably just leave it out.

Science plan light, james wellbeloved senior/light and go cat indoor as a mix would be fine. Try to stick to around 10% fat and at least 30% protein if not a little more but go easy on any biscuits over 35/36% as large quantities of high protein for a prolonged period of time can damage the kidneys.

on top of what other people have said also (too high a fat food might well just be the problem) but what cage is she in? Is she behind glass? If so you might need to put more vents in - I found glass magnified smells

Yeah shes behind glass I may put mesh on one side of it to help with the ventilation.

The vet didnt specify the indoor bit so I got any hills one.
Shes only been on it for just under 3 weeks now she was on a go cat indoor mixed with cheaper ones but the vet said any supermarket ones are a no go area.

What your vet didn't tell you was they need food to be 10% fat or less and 30% protein. Generally supermarket foods are crap, but they are okay as a part of a mix with biscuit/s of a higher quality. Go cat indoors is fine as part of a mix but you wouldn't want to feed it exclusively.

As I said earlier, hills indoor mixed with go cat indoor would be fine. I prefer to use a few different biscuits in my mix.

My mix at the moment is the following:

Burns - 28% protein and 12% fat
Hills Indoor - 31% protein and 8% fat
Purina one light - 38% protein and 10% fat
Purina one indoor - 33% protein and 14% fat
whiskas - 32% protein and 12% fat
go cat indoor - 32% protein and 10% fat

I like to add lots for variety and to balance out the protein/fat levels. I'm using Burns and science plan to form my 'base' mix, and adding in smaller amounts of all the others for variety and different flavors.

Take a look here to compare nutritional analysis
