Dinks chicken soup.

If you have a hedgehog that won't eat or is ill, then this may help!

- Boil some chicken thighs or legs for approx 30/40 minutes (chicken on the bone is best but fillets will be okay)
- Once the meat is tender, pull all the meat off the bone including the red meat next to the bone (its easiest to do this whilst still warm),
- Liquidize the meat using the water you boiled the chicken in - consistency depends on how you want to feed it, if you are syringe feeding you will need to make it quite runny.
- You can add any vit powders or drops to the soup once its in the bowl, if you add it to the whole mix and store it, vit content will de-grade.
- If the hog turns its nose up (rarely happens, lol), you can add a drop of honey to make it more appealing.
- If feeding hoglets or sometimes really sick hogs, you can add goats milk into it, but add this to the serving as opposed to the whole mixture, as it will go off quite quickly.
- You can also add crushed dried mealie worms to it and soaked biscuits, it all depends on what your hog is willing to eat. If plain food is required, i usually start with just the chicken soup, then add the mealies and eventually add the cat biscuit to wean them off it (be wary though, some cat biscuits go sour once soaked in water).
- Serve warm big smile

The mixture can be stored in the fridge for further use, make sure to warm it up before feeding again, i usually put some in an egg cup or similar and place this in a bigger bowl with hot water from the kettle (it does warm up quite quickly though, so be careful!).

I take no responsibility for any hedgehog becoming addicted to this though

How do you liquidise it? I pictured putting it in a blender....:O

lol! its addictive stuff lau
You can try thickening it up gradually and adding flaked bits of chicken to it, so eventually they are off the soup.
But otherwise can be counted the same as feeding as you would normal chicken etc, and maybe adding some veg on top of it.

No problems, glad they like it, it smells though thats for sure!!

I would think it would only become a problem for them if its all they will eat.

I just made this for the first time for my sick hog. I need to fatten her up for an op next week and she can't get enough. She loves it and seems my cat does too. Thanks for the recipe. Hopefully it will get her back on track.

Dink. You have no idea how much help this soup has been today. I made it initially for the hogs, its currently in there with them, porridge has had abit and hollys waiting until im not looking! However.... we have a 13 year old rescue cat (as well as a 1 year old kitty) that we got 3 years ago and we have always had serious problems with her weight and her starving herself....your chicken soup is now being used to beef her up, i put some broccoli and carrots in with it while it was cooking and i cant thank you enough for the result, hopefully this will help her finally get on track.

One delighted Moochy kitty! xxx

Thinking of making this and spiking it with a few veggies to get some vitamins into Harry. How often can you feed it, and how long will it keep in the freezer for? Also, what would be some good veg to add to it?

Thanks!

Chris

If you're syringe feeding it you can feed as often as needed, make sure its warm and i always leave a small amount in a shallow dish (again warm) to tempt them into eating. As a treat i would say twice weekly maybe as it can be quite addictive.
If you are feeding it just to get veg into your hog, you can try just boiling the veg in with the chicken as it takes on the taste of it and just leave it whole. I
have boiled every kind of veg you can think of and i've never had a hog turn it down, broccoli and carrot seems to work really well though.
If kept in the fridge then it keeps for 2 days, if in the freezer it can last for a couple of weeks....freeze in an ice cube tray for easy portion sizes, that way you can just pop out what you need for the day without defrosting the rest of it.

Hope your hog enjoys lau
