Citrus oils/extract?

Post  Kiania on February 21st 2011, 1:00 pm

I was browsing P@H for goodies today, and on a whim, looked at the back of their cat food packets. I saw that a few of them had citrus oils (might have been extracts?) in them, the one I remember was Purely, but I think the P@H Advanced Nutrition had them in as well.

I know citrus fruits are a big no-no, but should I also be worrying about it in the dry cat foods? Two out of the three packets I picked up (the last one was Royal Canin, which had a 17% fat content) had it in, which I know are on the nutrition list.

Thoughts?

Hmmm, i think there was a hiccup with pets at home purley as they changed the ingredients so that it was unsuitable with hoggies. I have pets at home purley as part of my old mix from before the ingredient change, there is a thread round here somewhere about it *goes thread hunting*

EDIT: I gave up my thread hunt....too much like hard work. lol!

It was the fact that out of the 3 I browsed, all were a bit meh for whatever reason, and 2 of them had citrus oils in them! Made me start to worry that it had been changed, or whether in that small amounts it was 'okay', so thought I should check!

I'll pop back in tomorrow with my list, and have all the packets off the shelf to see if any other brands have it in to compare! Thankfully, they are getting used to me wandering around every few days lau

Yeah, but thoselinks reference the protein content change, not the addition of citrus!

I was only absently browsing to look at what the protein/fats were (I have a spreadsheet taken from info off this forums here, but I'm unemployed and was wasting time due to the rain!), when I noticed citrus in the ingredients - which prompted a swift move home to panic here! Smile

Note, might be 'citrus fruit pulp', rather than oils - having read a link on from those links mentioned above:

I went to another pet shop on Saturday (it was awful, tiny, crampt, and I felt so sorry for the guinea pigs and rabbits - think hamster cage!). Today I went to P@H for Chin sand (and assorted other things that I felt I -had- to have once there!) where I found the citrus in cat food, and another pet shop near where I volunteer (which was better, less animals per cage and bigger cages, still not great though, but at least they had lots of goodies in their cages and hiding places - actual shop had bits and bobs cheaper than the internet, and lots of cute things!). The P@H is opposite me, and I moved here because they offered me a job...then after I'd moved, retracted it - they are not my favourite place in the world, but it is hard to boycot when it is within a five minute door-to-door walk, even after spending 4 minutes waiting to cross the road!)

Note: Might want to keep an eye on Applaws too, apparently it has citrus extract in http://www.petforums.co.uk/1764424-post5.html

In short, still no idea if citrus in the dried cat food is good or not...still worrying!
