Alternative to carefresh?

Post  joeyboy on March 10th 2011, 2:54 pm

Hiya folks I'm getting a hoggie soon which is kept on carefresh. Now I want to use fleece liners and this hog apparently doesn't use a litter tray, it just goes in the same corner. I was thinking to encourage it to use a litter tray I should put carefresh in it, however it seems to have very mixed reviews as a product which some saying bad batches can be dusty/cause dry skin. Is there anything which is very similar or do people use it here with no issue?

I use Carefresh for the whole cage and have had no problems. I've just ordered a bag of Megazorb to try that (it's much cheaper). Carefresh is really absorbant and keeps the smell down.

I use carefresh for litter trays and haven't had any issues with it.

My boy Rodolphus is a mucky pup and likes to poop wherever he fancies so I use megazorb as his main substrate instead of liners but still have carefresh in his litter pan.

Are there any pros, cons to carefresh?

I just bought a batch for my new hoglet until she is litter trained, and i must say i am quite liking it. It seems much more natural compared to fleece liners, regardless of how pretty my fleece liners are :O

But it does seem expensive (£5 for 14L, over half of which it has taken to fill the viv) that means it would be prob about £3.50 every time i clean my hog out no?)

I think it would encourage foraging and things to...considering changing to this if the hog is ok on it, tis quite cool looking :O But i deffo wont use it if there are any apparent negative effects to hogs that are kept on it

I have the pink colours carefresh and it's not dust one bit and it doesn't stick to the fleece liners either. I used it in the litter tray however I bought my roborovski hamsters some chin sand to play in and thought I'd try some in Sakura's litter tray yesterday when I cleaned her cage out. I went to inspect her cage this morning and this is the first time since I got her that all her business was done in the litter tray. She did manage to spread The sand all over the place though but I think she likes it Smile

Oh cool haha.

I think carefresh is expensive though. Was just reading about megazorb which is apparently the same but cheaper. Very confused now haha. I do like the confetti colours i.e. carefresh but im not paying £2 extra for it lol

I buy my carefresh off amazon from this supplier http://www.amazon.co.uk/Supreme-Petfoods-Carefresh/dp/B0020K48GA/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=pet-supplies&qid=1304268941&sr=8-1

It's much cheaper this way and the bag lasts prob about 2 months.

I've also started using megazorb. I use a layer of megazorb with a layer of carefresh over it. It makes the Carefresh last a lot longer. The bits of Megazorb are a lot smaller than Carefresh. That's the only real difference.

I'm not sure how much it swells. I suppose because it's under the carefresh I've never noticed. I'll go put some in some water and see what happens!

Well I just did that and they don't seem to really swell. They seem to be breaking up kind of like cotton wool would. Carefresh also seems to behave like that when soaked in water.

I ordered some today. It was £14.99 for the 60 litre bag without shipping. The amazon supplier I use is Surepets.

Re: Alternative to carefresh?

Post  Kiania on May 3rd 2011, 5:15 pm

The link said it was for 60 litres...I just looked from that to the next recommended product, which was megazorb (85 litres) for less than half the cost (£19.99 + £3.95 shipping for carefresh, and £8.75 + £4.99 shipping for the megazorb)...and decided that the megazorb looks a lot more economical!

Then again...the carefresh does pretty colours - not that I plan on using it, but for the rare occasions that I did, that'd be my swaying factor probably, rather than the price. If I was using it always, then price would be, obviously!
