chinchilla sand
how many of you use chin sand for their hogs to bath in. is it just for them to have some fun rolling around or does it actually keep them clean?
was thinking of getting some but thought I would check first.

Re: chinchilla sand
I use chin sand with all my hogs and the only one that doesn't roll in it is the only one that gets dry skin and tatty ears! I definately think it helps keep skin and quills in condition as well as being fun and a great litter too....it clumps just enough to enable seiving out of the yucky bits but not enough to harm if ingested.

Never thought of that. Do you mean smaller local pet stores? I had only tried pets at home who only had "dusting clay" and acorn pet centres who charge a rip off price for theirs, will have a shop around through the week i think

I will be getting some chin sand now too! Just to put in her playpen as something different for her to play in. I'm guessing the sand is quite fine though, do hogs accidentally inhale it? I know we should use dust free things because of inhalation and respiratory issues, chin sand doesn't cause any respiratory issues?

I use chinchilla sand under the wheel in the litter tray
The big plus is it keeps their feet so clean
I get mine in a huge sack from ebay

its true with the feet! Neo's as as nice as baby's bottom
and he digs in it for good few minutes before he poops so I never had to cut his nails. the only down side is that it is messy and gets in his quills and every time I pick him up I have sand on me.

Re: chinchilla sand
Im glad this has been posted as I wanted to ask a question about chinchilla sand and I think I might just highjack this thread a bit
We put a tray of chinchilla sand in Elvis' play area last night for the first time and we were in stitches! Does any one else's hog look like hes having a seizure when "rolling" in it?
Also Elvis didn't so much as roll but looked like he was trying to roll but not managing it, he then stopped doing one side and turned over and did the other.
It was very funny but strange as I expected him to roll like chinchillas as we used to have these as pets.

Re: chinchilla sand
hiya, just wanted to ask if the chinchilla dusting powder from pets at home is the same as normal chin sand? Was looking at another thread which suggested it is similar, but I want to be certain, as looks like on ebay there is a big blue bag in some shops which says is dust free, so was wondering if this one is better than the pets at home maybe? Am really paranoid about the wholoe dust thing, so would rather get one that other people get, but don't want a massive bag in case my hogs are not happy with it...Ody is so hard to please.
He definitely could use it with his dry skin.
