Fattening Up
Heya Guys
Horatio has never been a fat or big hog, he's a little on the small side tbh. what can i do to fatten him up?
he doesn't like mealies, he loves his boiled chicken or dry fried mince though, he has abit of brocoli and carrot sometimes. but he's really fussy with anything else really. his dry food is iams, purely, go cat indoor and p@h.
not really sure what i can try him on to fatten him up abit, he's getting a new bucket wheel soon and i don't want him to end up loosing too much weight from all the running around.
anyone got any ideas on what i can try him with? maybe some other treats or something else i can add to or change in his dry food mix?

Re: Fattening Up
Some hogs are going to be leaner than others, have you weighed him? If he seems happy then there may be no need to fatten him up. If he is burning more calories on his new wheel, he may eat more to compensate so you could just offer him a bit more and see if he eats it.

Re: Fattening Up
He doesn't look unhealthy in those pics, but I`m not an expert.
Kitten food normally contains more fat than adult cat food so you could try him on that to see if he gains a bit?

Re: Fattening Up
Do u know how big his mum and dad were?
He looks as though he's small in build, well not small but on the smaller scale of an adult if that makes sense
And is nothing to worry about if that's meant to be his natural frame
I try to keep adults weighing around 300g min but I do have 2 that used to weigh between 265 - 275
It may be worth you removing the Go Cat Indoor form his diet. I have done that with my two as I dont want them to go below those weights esp during times of increased wheel exercise. In my experience hedgies loose weight on Go Cat so I have completely removed it from my heard diet and replaced it with Whiskas Indoor.
Joe and Jills is also a very good food to give and helps prevent weight loss. u can get this via Asda or on line.
PLEASE dont give kitten food it contains milk. Talking of milk I also have started giving my little ones some goats milk once a week which they LOVE as well as dinks Chicken soup which is high in protein. Since making these changes my two now maintain a steady weight of around 282 - 290g. To me they look better for it. I made these changes because I felt they were lighter than they naturally should have been. BUT if you think yours are in the right proportions to thier frame then u prob dont have to change anything.
I think you should go on your gut instinct here. If you're unhappy about his weight it would be worth you changing his diet a little to see if he does put some on and if he does and you are happier about his overall frame then you should stick to those changes.
Weigh him every week and see if he does gain weight.
He wont eat mealies but will he eat Morio Worms (I have one who wont touch mealies but would kill for a Morio)
Silk work worms
vacuum packed Crickets

Re: Fattening Up
ok hun well he;s got a fan of the go cat anyway lol so i'll just leave that
he does to me look like he's a quite small frame anyway - can't remember his parents, have 'tidied' his ped away too safely lol. rich?
i'll make him some soup and goats milk and try him with the other food in the mix too... i know kitten food is a no no so i wouldn't go there
how do you feed the soup and goats milk, do you give them on a spoon for via syringe - i'd rather not the latter tbh, i don't like syringe feeding little animals if i don't have to
will have to try the crickets and see if i can find this funny worm hehehe

Re: Fattening Up
Can't add anything to what Dexnos has already said but just wanted to let you know that my boy Boss Hog is of small build - he eats the same as my others and does love his wheel and he is fit and healthy. I simmer some chicken thighs up (Dinks Soup) but rather than blending it I just strip the meat from the bones and feed this to my gang twice a month as a treat.

Just to clear this up, some kitten foods do contain milk but there are a lot that do not. If you are unsure, then always avoid kitten food, but there are some very good kitten foods that could benefit young hogs in the same way that they will benefit young cats as they are fortified with vitamins and minerals essential for growth, along with a higher fat content and stronger aroma to help hogs find and eat it.
