Grumpy Angry Hedgehog! Advice needed!

Post  wilbert on September 3rd 2008, 9:29 pm

Hello, Im looking for some advice on my male hedgehog, he is 9 months old and up until last month when he mated last month he has been a super friendly hedgehog he loved coming out of his cage and having cuddles. Now he seems pretty miserable..... this last couple of days especially hes huffing and puffing when i go near him which isnt normal and hes biting at anything infront of him. Today when I got him out he bit me which he never done before.
If anyone can give me any advice i'd really appreciate it, im worried about him because he is definetly out of character. Ive tired checking him over to see ifs hes sore or anything but its hard as hes trying to bite everything! I have noticed he seems to be scratching more than normal. Gave him bath yesterday and he seemed to calm down after that but then later on after being back in cage he was angry again stormin around huffing and puffing!
I dont want to take to to the vet if its unecessary or its something im doing wrong, ive cleaned his cage out, i do everyday, someone i know said they thought it was because he was a male and after being with a female he obviously wanted more and expected that when i went in his cage or picked him out Hedgie was assuming it was the female hedgehog back again. But im not sure!
Thanks
Genette

What did you bathe him in? It seems to have helped. Is it possible hes quilling, but only a litte? My girls about 11 months now and ive noticed shes got quite a few new quills growing through, although i dont think its officially quilling as shes too old im giving her all the treatments i would were she as it looks quite sore. Or perhaps mites? I dont think it would be a waste of time visiting your vet if he/she knows alot about APH's. Is the temperature in there right? Silly things like that sometimes make my hedgies grumpy. Also perhaps cleaning him out daily isnt helping a great deal as i imagine his bed hes worked hard making comfy is ruined. Just a few suggestions, im sure someone more knowledgeable will come along and give you some better advice. Smile

Also, ever since i bred mine the male is ALWAYS (and i mean always) trying to stand up and see into my females cage. She stands up too and they sniff eachother which is cute, but i can imagine how fustrated he must be, although it hasnt ruined his temperment. So perhaps your friend is right, although i wouldnt know how to help were this the case..:(

Thanks for your help, I just bathed him in warm water with nothing added. Im going to do his cage in morning but not put any carefresh in, just the newspaper he normally has in the bottom and try and eliminate if somehting is irritating him.
I've never had to take any of my hedgehogs to the vets before so i dont know how experienced my local vet is with hedgehogs. I would travel to one someone could recommend though.
I was thinking maybe he could still smell the girls... but they are in a completely different room downstairs and i always wash my hands between handling them. I'll see how he is after removing carefresh and try a new blanket.... just wondering maybe its my new washing tablets.... ive been reading all the messages on here and thinking what other things could be causing it. Going to warm room up for him too just incase, maybe he warmed up after being in water then cooled down again making him grumpy!!
Thanks for all your advice! I really appreciate it, im so proud of him, he's a dad for the very first time!! his partner had 4 babies 2 weeks ago... they are sooo cute!

Frontline spray for cats and dogs is best. I wouldn't bother with pet shop remedies at all, Frontline can be gotten from the vets and if you explain the reasons, they should give it without seeing the hog.

Signs of mites can be... lost quills with no root ball, tiny white dots on quills/face/ears that you may see moving, excessive scratching, tattered ears.

Put hoggie on a dark piece of paper and see if you see oany little white moving dots drop onto it!

Treating him 'just in case' will do him no harm but keep him warm directly after treatment as the spray saps their body heat!

My hog had a bad case of mites although I never saw any! She also lost quills with the rootball!!! I now spray all my hogs once every 4-5 weeks as a preventative measure with frontline. Like Bonnie said it will do them no harm.

all hogs are different and unfortunately you can never tell what they are gonna be like after breeding. thats one of the many downfalls of breeding.
hopefully he will come round. big smile

thanks for all your advice, had Hedgie checked today at vets and he has been treated for mites we couldnt find any but just to be sure. He's also got some antibiotics- Baytrill 0.05ml twice a day to be added to food for 5 days. I'm not sure what the antibiotics are for really as he said there wasnt nything visable wrong with him. He said if he wasnt any better after a week or so to take him back and they anethetise him and examine him properly which im not so keen on.
Hopefully he will be more himself after his frontline spray and i've upped the temperature in the room hes in for him.
Thanks again for all your help!

Well, I hope he improves for you hon'. I wouldn't recommend an anaesthetic if there seems to be nothing wrong. It can be very risky for little critters and why risk it? The temp adjustment is a good idea and maybe lots of favourite treats to bribe him back to your way of thinking big smile
