Exccesive drinking?

Post  angriesthedgehog on September 11th 2011, 8:34 pm

may sound a really daft question but Penelope has been drinking huge amounts of water (she has a large untippable dish) every morning and evening her bowl is nearly dry and she rushes to drink every time I fill it up. Its actually at the stage where I cant work out where she keeps the water! She is acting the same, looks heathy, eats and poops fine. Could it just be hot weather? Am I worrying for nothing or could this be a sign of a health problem? Confused lol! None of my other hogs drink more than half a bowl a day...

yes - she drinks a rabbit sized bowl full! how can a tiny animal contain that much?

Oh, ok. Well in that case, she must be gravely ill. I would get her to the emergency vets asap. whistling

On a more serious note, maybe she is warmer or running more? Stumped. lol!

water intake at that level could be something to do with the kidneys, poss infection so would be worth checking out especially if shes been having alot for a while

Muahahahaha! cool lol!

Would it be possible to get a urine sample to take to the vet? That's what i had to do with Holly when she was having incontinence issues and needed her urine tested for infection, but im guessing it would be alot harder getting a pee sample from a hog lol x

this has to be the weirdest thing ever...

Pene had somehow managed to swallow a quill and it was lodged in her throat!! She was acting completely normal, hadnt shown any signs of discomfort at all! it seems she was just drinking to try to remove the itchyness. Its now gone and he said to give her a week (to allow it to heal) and if she is still drinking like that take her back. God knows how she managed to do that! And then hide it
