Ruby went to the vets today :-(
Bit of a nightmare because she is very possibly pregnant and the vet felt her belly and said there is quite a big something in her belly (if not babies which is highly likely then she will need a scan to check for cycts or a tumour so am hoping she is preggers) the only thing is that she has a mouth infection - which would also tie in with her being preggers because it leaves their auto immunity deficient - so shes on antibiotics twice a day which is a nightmare because Tenrecs dont open their mouths like APH and it risks stressing her out prior to birth which could be imminent - my vet has chosen synolox as the antibiotic because its apparently the safest one to use in pregnancy with little documented risk to developing foetuses so fingers crossed that is the case and they are mostly developed anyway by now so hopefully it wont affect them
She was a bit of a celebrity though at the surgery and ever so chilled out with everyone having a little hold and being photographed by the RSPCA officer who came in for a pick up and was highly facinated by her ... my vet did have a giggle though because the receptionist had reg'd her as a common rodent-hamster and he was like thats wrong on every account - I did wonder why you were bringing me a hamster - LMAO!!!!!
...... and I got to meet an 8 week old marmoset monkey

Re: Ruby went to the vets today :-(
thanks everyone
caz I think late summer/early autumn is quite normal - my baby off Razzy was born in september
no signs of nest building but I think shes feeling sorry for herself and I'm not holding out much hope for babies survival if she does have them - she looks really down at the moment but at the end of the day as long as she pulls through ok then I can deal with anything else - I'm really worried about her because the giving her meds is really stressing her as shes not liking it so I'm having to be quite forceful in getting them into her and shes now gone off her food
I cant trick her into taking them on food like you can with aph they arent as greedy

Re: Ruby went to the vets today :-(
sorry to hear that Kirst. from my little, tiny experience I would say they must be a nightmare to medicate etc. They are certainly more complicated than APH and I think more complex.
I'm sure this is really worrying time for you. Your right shes the priority. She's is safe hands with you so has every chance of coming out of this the other side in good health.
Thinking of you both

Re: Ruby went to the vets today :-(
That sounds exactly what happened to mine, except the infection was at the other end. After a scan & X-ray it was trapped wind & the vet thought that perhaps it was shutting down its body for "hibernation" too soon & out of sync
I found the anti-biotics were easiest to give by putting in to the side of their mouth & gently pushing till they took them

Re: Ruby went to the vets today :-(
thanks for asking Jo and thanks everyone
well she ate last night because I had a lovely job of cutting up morio worms to see if that would help and it worked - shes getting a bit easier with the meds - poor thing I made her bleed though getting the syringe in one side where the infection is :-( so am only doing the other side of the mouth now but she didnt complain she is such a sweet natured thing its breaking my heart having to be so forceful with her - on the plus side she seems a tiny bit brighter

When mine was sick & wouldnt eat the vet gave me Science Plan A/D (Wet food), got him eating again & its soft already but can be mixed with water to make it more paste like & Syringe fed if needed. Only problem being I've now reduced the water to non & thats all I can get him to eat, but I'll work on that when he gets to be more than Minimum weight.
One thing I learned when mine was sick was to watch them with their fluid intake, there bad enough drinkers as it is but mine ended up dehydrated in no time when he was sick
