Can't find 10% fat biscuit

Post  tibicar on October 9th 2011, 12:06 pm

Looked at Iams, joe and jill and Purina, looked at indoor, light, adult. Just can't seem to find one under 14% fat.
What biscuits does everyone else use?

Thanks, picking up new hoglet on 13th Nov, it comes with a mix but I want to make sure I can make one, maybe combine it with mix from breeder so that it's used to my mix. Found a thread called what's in your mix. Will double check exactly what's in breeders mix. big smile
We have a colony of dubia roaches and locusts so live food is sorted.
How much off a boiled or scrambled egg do you give them?

Post  gnj4eva_2009 on November 25th 2011, 4:46 pm

the only 2 biscuits i think i have found that match the 30% and 10% rule closely are
iams light with chicken(blue packet)can get in most supermarkets
or sanabelle light with chicken, some pet shops stock or online

most people use mixes because it adds more variety to the food, prevents fussy eating and if a biscuit is no longer stocked its easy to change the biscuit over
where as if you use 1 biscuit and they stop selling it dependant on how much food you have left would mean you have a hedeghog with an upset tummy

when looking for a biscuit look for the first ingrediant being chicken or chicken or meat meal rather than it being a deriviative.

biscuits with the chicken or chicken meal the meat used are the good parts of the meat that humans would eat
where as a biscuit with derivatives are the scrap bits of meat and you dont know what the scrap bits of the meat are

youl also find if you pick up biscuits to compare them the biscuits with chicken/or chicken or meat meals smell nice, the biscuits have a nice feel and look ok for a biscuit
if you pick up a biscuit that is a derivative most smell horrible, look greasy, feel greasy and are quite rough looking (in my opinion anyway)

First number is %protein, second is %fat, third is first 5 ingredients (sorted by %fat top to bottom). Obviously you want to pick two to four with about 30% protein and 15% fat, although the numbers can vary about, and those has meat as the first ingredient. Most people add a small amount of Go Cat for odour control - of my mix, I hav (simplified a bit) a 2kg/2kg/2kg/1kg split of my four, and the last is Go Cat of three different varieties.

Whiskers and Go Cat are added junk food. They really should not be the main part of a mix at all. Their first ingredient is cereals, and the second is meat and animal derivatives (that'd be chicken legs, eyes and beaks in layman's terms!). There is very little 'good' nutrient-wise in them - yes their protein/fat is in the right ball park, but it'd be like feeding a person a solid diet of bread. Bread isn't 'bad' in moderation, but it doesn't really add anything - cereals are all filler, so not only is it not really healthy (false healthy, a bit like probiotic yogurts!), but it also means your hog has to eat an awful lot more to get the nutrients they require (costly, although Whiskers and Go Cat are cheap junk; and not terribly good for the obese regarding energy levels).

A lot of people here use Go Cat, as I said above, in small amounts within their mix for odour control. A bit like having a slice of toast once a day - it also adds variety. Not heard the same about Whiskers, but considering the ingredients, it might act the same. Either way, no well-kept hog should be fed either of these as a primary diet, and certainly not as their only source of kibble.

You really need to be considering the first 5, as well as the protein and fat %s. It is more important in many ways, as the protein/fat can be a little more flexible within the mix.

(Whiskers data taken from 'Whiskas Adult Complete Cat Food with Chicken and Vegetables' http://www.petsathome.com/shop/whiskas-adult-complete-cat-food-with-chicken-and-vegetables-950g-2kg-and-4kg-14895 )

Yes, but I was pointing out that you cannot have just one kibble, it should be a mix of 2-4 (or more if you're so inclined) types of food. Fresh food (mince, chicken, veg, fruit) is a different thing entirely.

Yes, yes, I know. But newblets that know diddly also read the threads on this forum, so it is always best to clarify something - who knows who will read this thread (and only this thread), and think that feeding Whiskers/Go Cat to their hog as the only kibble is the acceptable way to do things.
