Pine Nuts

Post  nell on October 22nd 2011, 4:56 pm

Ok obviously they're v high in fat, and have little nutritional value, but are they ok to feed as an occasional treat? My hedgie was snuffling around earlier and found one on the sofa left over from having my gliders out, and she absolutely adored it! Was a bit worried as I'd never given her anything like that before, but she seems ok now, and goes crazy for the smell of them on my fingers.

Thoughts please!

I think nuts and seeds are generally a no no, because of the potential chocking risk.

Yeah, they come under the do-not-feed section because of the potential for choking - and while the hoggy-heimlich manouver does exist, it is something of a specialist subject.

Some pits and seeds are toxic to hogs (not sure if that extends to nuts and legumes, or pine nuts specifically). Nutrition-wise, nuts in general are very high in fat, so it'd have to be occasional.

I guess crushing the pine nuts into a powder may work, but I know Bodhi won't bother with anything powdered.
