Vivarium/cage project

Post  broley on October 26th 2008, 11:40 am

Hi everyone again

this is how I am planning on my vivarium/cage looking.

Please note: it is NOT to scale as I have made it up on photoshop - spacing between the vertical bars will be 13mm (budgie cage front). I may be able to get the fronts without lift up doors. If I can only get fronts with lift up doors I will secure these shut to prevent escape.

The interior of the vivarium will measure 122cms x 57cms x57cms. I will be using white contiboard to make the whole thing. I will also put a ventilation strip along the back.

The bottom housing is for my already resident guinea pigs - the top will be for my future hoglet Cool

The plinths top and bottom will be about 8 cms deep. I am planning at this moment in time of having sliding doors like on the glass fronted aquarium - although I might hinge if it proves easier.

I am open to any suggestions.........and I might also need some luck as I am the one making it Shocked

An update:

I have decided to make 2 different vivariums - glass doors (with extra ventilation) for my future hedgehog and another with bars for my guinea pigs.

I will post finished pics when I am done - although I'm not rushing this project as I could be in for a long wait for my hoglet Wink

I have a rubber wedge for the glass doors to stop Conker opening them.

Bonnie the narrow vertical cage fronts arrived damaged so I had to return them. I think it was a blessing though as the glass is sooo much better Cool

I had these mesh panels in the garage which are perfect for the guinea pigs; so I got a myself a refund instead of an exchange and saved a bit of money Very Happy

No way would I have used the guinea pigs panels for Conker - although they are used for C & C caging in America - often for hedgehogs unsure

Conker tried to visit his neighbours last night; he would've got through the gaps no bother at all - but I spoilt his fun lau

The stools I found in a hardware store - They are the ones for stumpies like me - to reach high kitchen shelves wub

Faith the water bottle is great but the suction cups don't stay on very well without a bit of help - I used a good dollop of no nails glue on mine big smile I have a water dish underneath at the moment but I will probably move that out now that he knows where to find water - although I haven't seen him use the bottle confused

Huffpuff lol!

My hubby doesn't particularily like any animal so I can't use that trick - poor thing then married me - I'm not saying I am an animal you understand Shocked lau I in contrast would have a houseful of pets if I could Smile

Conker has decided however that he wants to be Chris's friend - he beelines for him everytime he wanders on the couch. Chris still can't pick him up but now lets him snuggle up - either that or he ends up sitting on the floor lau

Makes sense why Conker is making a beeline for him then. I am sure animal have a sick sense about peoples feelings towards them. It's the "so you don't like me then - well I'm your new best friend so tongue " method of making people change their minds!! big smile
