A cure for some hedgehog cancers?

Post  rachaellyndsey on December 5th 2011, 1:22 pm

My vet, in consultation with Edinburgh University exotics department believes that my Jenny's cancer can be cured with Electrochemotherapy. The following is a description of the procedure, by the practice which does it located in
knaresborough.

http://petcancervet.co.uk/ect.htm

According to Edinburgh, Jenny would be the first known pygmy hedgehog in the UK to try this treatment, and they say that theres at least an 80% chance the cancer will not return and she will be completely cured. Her cancer type is a soft tissue non-aggressive sarcoma to the lower jaw. She had a tumor removed, but it is quickly growing back under her chin.

Has anyone heard of this treatment, or any type of chemotherapy?

We're going to get blood tests and x-rays done of Jenny to assess her overall health before deciding on going ahead with this treatment, but even if it cannot help Jenny, it certainly looks interesting!!

No idea of cost as of yet, can't imagine it'll come cheap but we'll see! Should be finding out prices/if we're going ahead with it in the next few days so will definitely keep people updated.

I would be really interested to hear about the out come of this treatment if you decide to go ahead. I have lost one hedgehog to cancer, and I fear I am soon to lose another girl to cancer too. It would be so amazing if the Electrochemotherapy did indeed cure your hog Smile

Where is it that you are based- are you in Scotland? If so, may I ask which Vet you use? - as I have used the Royal Dick Vet (Edinburgh Vet School) in the past.. but was never told of any treatments that could have helped my first hog Mrs Milligan, with the mouth tumour etc. Or is the Electrochemotherapy a new type of treatment?

Sorry for the questions.

Sarah

I live in Sunderland (just below newcastle), so my vet would be quite a drive for you! She said something about Edinburgh university having the UKs exotics research center, so she rang them to discuss the type of tumor and other recorded cases of APH having them, treatment and results etc. From that, they said that either radiotherapy or amputation are the known ways to deal with this cancer, but that electrochemotherapy was entirely feasible but no-ones tried it yet.

The electrochemotherapy vet is in Knaresborough, off hand I think around 2 hours from us, so about 4 hours drive for you. He's the one who's said that he believes electrochemotherapy would have a really high chance of complete cure, & now with Edinburgh being supportive we can go ahead.

She's booked in for her pre-tests tomorrow. I'm not hugely confident that we can go ahead with it as she's quite a large hog, but definately thought it was worth mentioning in case someone else can use the info gained in the future Smile Fingers crossed for my hog tomorrow though

So we had the x-ray and tests done to see if she's fit and well enough for the electrochemotherapy today. The tests came back fine, but the x-ray showed that the cancer affected a big proportion of her mouth, approx 60% of her lower jaw bone. The rest of her organs etc are fine, no tumors anywhere else. This unfortunately means that we can't try the electrochemotherapy as with it involving such a large proportion of bone, she'd be unable to eat after.

I asked to be sent the xrays via email, so will upload them when I get them

If anyone goes through cancer and wants to ask me anything, please email rachael.l.simpson@gmail.com

Thanks for all your help Smile
