Re: Hunger strike - please help
He is ok today, I am struggling with what to do with him. He comes out and about for a wander around quite often, fights like hell when being fed and generally seems too bright to consider putting to sleep but the only reason he has picked up somewhat is because of syringe feeding and he is still refusing to eat anything by himself. I am wondering if he will go downhill again now he has got the hang of spitting back out the syringed food. Obviously I cant continue syringe feeding indefinitely to keep him going its not fair on him. I guess I will just have to reassess the situation when the food starts running out in a week or so :( Its a shame hedgehogs dont seem to show their illnesses well, with my rats they told me exactly when they had had enough they were so very easy to read, Trio just seems to be hanging in there not getting better or worse.

I am glad there is a little improvement love, believe me, we are all hoping and praying. Bunniees are also good at hiding illnesses and it is awful when hou find it is too late to do anything.
Lots of love and cuddles on their way and thank you for keeping us posted.

Re: Hunger strike - please help
Oh Jo dont talk to me about bunny illnesses!! My girlie bun has had some mystery illness for a couple of months now. It really weird, she gets herself covered underneath in matted faeces but there has been no diarrhoea in the hutch or run at all, she is acting just as normal. The vet said he didnt know what was wrong with her. Her diet has been changed to cut out the pellets and they live on masses of hay and fresh herbs everyday. It seems to be a gradual build up that gets matted to her, got no idea what is causing it. Luckily it is her and not my male bunny as he is a sweetheart on the ground but an absolute nightmare to catch and pick up, he fights, scratches and kicks and I look like I have gone a few rounds with a slasher afterwards! We are on a de-pooing her mission tonight when OH gets in. I feel sorry for him, he seems to have a never ending duty of helping me with grim jobs with the animals and he will have a new baby to change too in a few weeks!

Oh sweetie, it is a constant worry isn;t it I do hope she is better soon? Guineas are also difficult to treat; my little Katy Cuddle-Hugs has developed a raspy cough although she is eating and doing everything else normally.
We took her to the vet this morning and of course the old cure-all Baytril was prescribed. We are keeping a close eye on her though.

Re: Hunger strike - please help
Sad update today. Trio was taken to be put to rest this afternoon. He never started eating again and was syringe fed for 3 weeks with no improvement. The last couple of days he had been looking very wobbly and weak. I couldnt put him through any more stress of syringe feeding with no improvement, it just seemed that the feeding battle everyday was literally just keeping him alive rather than helping him in the end. So this morning I made the decision today to let him rest. It broke my heart. I cried and cried at the vets. The vet said it was the only thing to do for him, there were no other options left. He also said that Trio's intestines were very inflamed and so he suspected a tumour or possibly a blockage but that he would not have started eating again by himself. It was clearly the kindest thing to do but it feels so awful. He was the sweetest little hog, never once ever showed any aggression, was so gentle, never even balled or huffed during our daily feeding battles, he just squirmed and put up with it. He was extremely special to me, it has broken my heart. Rest peacefully sweetheart xxx

Oh my darling, I am so very sorry and moved to tears myself. Sometimes it is just their time and even though we do our very best for them, it is not meant to be. It hurts like hell and never goes away but you gave him a great life. He is now pain free at the Bridge and waiting for you.
If you need to talk more about it, you know where I am.
With lots of love and comforting vibes on their way.
Hugs

I am so sorry to hear this. It was heart breaking to read it. But you have done all you could, if not more. And it is probably the best decision, but must have been the hardest decision.
I am sure little trio is looking down at you from heaven and will be there waiting for you. RIP trio

Thankyou for all the kind comments, I miss Trio terribly. I just keep looking at his empty viv in my lounge :( He is with his baby now though, we lost the tiniest of his only litter of babies, little Bramble who was an adorable mini Trio and about 7 weeks old when he passed away, and I like to think that Trio and Bramble are together now.

I've been reduced to tears too.
You clearly did your best for him!
I know the feeling of looking at an empty viv that not even 24 hours ago they were living in, little paw imprints in the dusting sand :( I didn't want to throw it away at first!
Sleep tight little Trio

I am sure Trio is with Little Bramble, they have both been 2 very lucky hedgehogs who had a wonderful life with you.
And I am sure they are both on a little cloud in heaven looking down at you.
Cherish the memories you have of them.
