Sleeping location
Bit of a odd question but one I thought I'd ask on a monday morning!
Both myself and my girlfriend get up early for work around (around 5.30 - 6) and tend to catch chopper in his wheel still awake, he runs off and hides, but not in his house, he will hide squeezed behind his litter tray, or bury himself in the sandy stuff in the litter tray because this is where he feels is safe.
My question: (we've tried both, but which is better in your opinion?)
Would you leave him squeezed into the corner and let him move if he wanted too? (he tends to stay there all day and night till we get him out around 8pm)
Or would you carefully get him out so him he can go and have a proper sleep in his house?

Re: Sleeping location
Thats a tricky one
Bobby is up when I get up at 6.30am too. He often sleeps in the chinchilla dust in his litter tray squeezed behind his wheel. But, sometimes in his house too.
Often he is in his house in the evening, then a couple of hours later he is sleeping in his tray behind his wheel.
I think he moves depending on whether his house is too warm. Have you checked the temperatures in his cage?

Re: Sleeping location
Thats the same stuff that Chopper sleeps in - I forgot the name of it!
The vivarium is a constant 25 degrees with the CHE bulb in the middle so it's evenly spread.
I think he only sleeps in the chinchilla sand because its the closest place to him when we walk in on him whilst he is on his wheel. I just don't know if I should leave him there and let him sleep in the sand, or just carefully move him to his secure home where he'll feel safer.

Re: Sleeping location
with the che bulb - I personally would move it to one side so the hoggie has a warmer and cooler end so he can choose his temperature to snooze in (unless you have been having hibernation issues)
Personally I would leave him to get on with it lol - they do have to sleep in funny places though

Can someone please tell me what a CHE bulb is, how it works and whether it is a good idea?

Re: Sleeping location
Perhaps get chopper out in the morning and feed him some mealies, so he gets used to you both and use it as a bonding session and then when you put him back in then put him in his house.

Re: Sleeping location
Neither of us really have time in the morning to get him out and feed him. I think I solved it to a degree - I turned his litter tray and wheel around so its now on the side of his vivarium so he actually has loads more space to run around and now there is nothing really for him to hide squeezed against.
Only time can tell, He was in his house when I got up today so that's a good start!

It stands for Ceramic Heating Emitter.
It's just a type of bulb that emits heat and no light, it's best used with a thermostat so that you can control the temperature in the vivarium and not have to worry about the temperature dropping. Temp gets too low and the hog hiberates.
Well worth every penny, although if you're like me, you will spend most of time triple checking to make sure its still working lol
