Quill Loss and Dry Skin

Post  enigma.b17 on January 16th 2012, 12:04 pm

Hi All

Long time no posty! But with this country quickly going down the toilet, i'm finding it more and more difficult to get time to post on forums :(

Anyway, back to my question. One of my APH's, aka Skittles, aka the Grumpy Hog, has got very very dry skin. Almost looks like hes got dandruff. I've been using Flakseed oil (from tablets) in his food, and putting drops of vit-e oil on his back quite regularly. (Will try and get picture of it later on when I get home).

As an example I took him out for a bath there a cpl of days ago, and between the time I took him out and put him back in his enclosure (approx 30 mins), I would say I found at least 20 quills. Now on the up side most of these had their balls so don't think its mites, but I for the life of can't figure out why its happening to him. My other boy (Alfie), exactly the same environmental conditions, and his skin is fine, rarely drops a quill. At this point they would be getting to the 6 months old mark (ish), I will need to go check that as my Brain is a little tired at the moment.

I've no idea how to help him anymore, any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Planning on bringing them down to the vet this weekend should nothing improve.

All the best
Shane

p.s. HAPPY NEW YEAR!
New years resolution is to post on here more!

brush his spines over black fabric and you may see little white moving dots - if you do then he deffo has mites.

For dry skin - I find that in winter time esp, the central heating tends to dry hedgie skin - could be what is causing it. Have you tried aveeno oil? Or adding a little olive oil to his food? How often do you bathe him as that can also dry hedgie skin.

I'll defo give that a go! I am under the inclination that its not mites, as their stuff gets washed quite regularly.

They have had 2 baths thus far, one on last sat and another about 2 months before that.
Last bath I had aveeno oil in it, lathered some up and brushed his spines with it aswell. I'll see if its had any effect tonight but at the time it hadn't

Will try the suggestion of black fabric, hopefully its not mites.

Could try a humidifier to combat the winter central heating? Basically a pot of water on a radiator (or search amazon for similar). Doesn't have to be a costly electric affair, it can be as simple as the above.
