Archies build in progress

Post  bevnkev on January 24th 2012, 9:46 pm

We got Archie around 2 weeks ago and to be honest did everything backwards, after getting the little lad home realised the cage we had was far to small so we bought 2 x 4ft vivs for him. In time the upstairs will be linked to the bottom when i get around to it.

Heres a few pics of the set up and more importantly Archie

well was going to link the pics but not allowed for 7 days sad

These pics are not the most recent, the bottom viv has now got a pet blanket in, corner litter tray, we also got an hanging water bottle as he kept turning his water bowl up. The temp of the viv is controlled by the stc-1000 cooling and heating controller with an heat mat

Looking of some of the build pics we have got a long way to go yet

How old is Archie? Nothing wrong with the setup looks great but if he's still under 10 weeks you may need to remove the wheel for a little bit Smile
Looking good x

Oh good, just checking don't want him having poorly legs big smile
Maisie is the same in a bath, never huffs in a bath because she's too busy trying to get out but as soon as she is out she's back to raising her quills and being grumpy hah! Hopefully in time he will stop like you said you've only had him two weeks! He is just lovely! I think I want an albino hog next so pretty! x

Two males will fight to the death if they are put in the same enclosure, two females have been known to get along if littermates or mother/daughter but this is extremely rare and I would never put two hogs together. I personally just wouldn't risk it as they are solitary animals.

Yes water bottles are bad for them as they can smash/crack their teeth on the metal tube, I don't think their teeth are as strong as Rats/Degus/Gerbils one tip is to put a water bowl underneath his water bottle to try and encourage him to drink from a bowl, once he starts to drink from a bowl remove the water bottle if possible.

Theres a huge learning curb with hedgehogs and I still learn something new everyday lol! this website has helped me massively as everyone can give you their personal experience or advice unlike somewhere such as wikipeadia where you're unsure if the facts are true.

Everything else looks great big smile

Try and get a really heavy ceramic dish, like for a rabbit. My Degu's are strong little buggers and even they can't tip it up and there is 5 of those in one enclosure. lol!
I have a rabbit one and I think it came from Pets@Home, it's reletively large but wouldn't take up his whole enclosure. big smile

Re: Archies build in progress

Post  Kiania on January 26th 2012, 5:09 pm

The difference between rodents (in general + rabbits) and hogs with regards to bottles is somewhat numerous. One, tooth chipping - rodents teeth grow continuously, if they chip off a tooth, no big deal, but hogs only get the same amount of sets as us, if they chip one, it is gone for good. Two, tongues - a few hogs have had their tongues caught by the bottles - no idea if this is a problem in rodents, but it does appear to be one for hogs. Three, position - rodents (as a general rule) are vertical animals, in that they can sit on their bums; Hogs are horizontal animals, therefore drinking from a bottle, for a hog, is an unnatural position as they have to tip their head right back - bit like us trying to drink out of something that is above and behind us, think of the crink in the neck!

I use what are essentially cat dishes - fairly shallow (2 or 3 cm deep), and wide (14cm wide). Bodhi can wade through her water bowl (if she so desires), but she can't toss it. I know Joey's cat bowls are also rather on the heavy side (proper thick ceramic), so might be worth shooting him a PM - on the other plus side, they are also fairly cheap Very Happy

Some people have looked into the reptile feeders, the bottles with a pool underneath. Not sure what the upshot of it was, but since you have to change the water every day anyway, I'd figure that would just be a bit of a pain in the bum to do. I see no issue with it, as long as the pool at the bottom was big enough for a hog to use.

Hey also what is that wire coming from one of the vents? Just be a little careful as hogs aren't generally chewers but some can be, don't want your little man to get hurt. Smile x
