Fat Hog
Mr Toffee my 3 year old male African pygmy hedgehog developed a fatty lump on his shoulder/behind his ear just before christmas, he had some swelling and has also been behaving a bit strangely and not eating as much as usual. My local vet removed pus and gave him some antibiotics as it was slightly infected. Over the next week the bruising did go down but some swelling on the back of his neck increased and the lump returned. I was referred to an exotic specialist in Warwick who I saw this morning he told me Mr Toffee is overweight. Adult male hogs should weigh 500-600 grams and Mr T is 682 >_<
What a fat hog! :ew: I thought he was OK as I tend to check every so often and he can still easily roll into a tight ball.
The specialist vet suggested a lot of expensive treatments for my middle aged hog, checking his teeth and removing plaque if necessary, taking bloods to have tested and removing the lump and sending that to be tested to check for malignant or benign cells. I'm going to ask for advice from my local vet on these treatments, she did offer to remove the lump first but suggested a specialist opinion to confirm. Also worrisomely I think that maybe the blood work and teeth check might not be immediately necessary? At least put of intill we can get some pet insurance as the bill will nearly reach £400
which we don't have atm.
So my post is this: I feed Mr Toffee usually 18grams of 1/3 iams chicken flavoured dry kitten food and 2/3 hills chicken flavoured dry kitten food. He usually eats half/10 grams or so. The vet has said this diet is too high in fat, and kitten food alone is not good enough for him. I also give him 3/4 live meal worms a day as a treat when we get him out. The vet suggested more bugs to replace some of the kitten food. He doesn't eat enough to make buying live ones worth while (I have never bothered with crickets, there are just not small enough portions) so i'm not sure of other options as he seems to be a fussy eater
. I have also tried pretty much every other food you can give hedgehogs, carrot, peas, banana, broccoli, and other fruit and veg, boiled and scrambled egg, tuna, minced beef and chicken, he did not have any interest what so ever (even when I left some carrot in the worm bag to trick his nose). What do you guys feed your aph? I'd also be grateful of any other suggestions on how to reduce his fat intake.

Re: Fat Hog
yeah the diet is to high in fat, id recommend changing to the light versions of the food you are using, or look at some alternative brands
the guidelines are 30%+ protein and 10%- fat contents
id probably also reduce the amount of worms you feed or miss them out for a few weeks,
do you feed him any meat? (chicken etc...)
also apparently a 3 years old hog is the equivalent of a 53 year old human!

It seems to come so naturally, How you annoy me, How you destroy me

Re: Fat Hog
As well as fruit and veg I have tried minced beef, chicken and even tuna but he is just not interested lol I will try him with some live crickets but i'm stumped as to what else to try him on, he is so fussy.
There are only 2 or 3 worms let in my fridge so ill give him those over the next week (maybe after the vets as he will not being eating properly and recovering from surgery) and then not give him anymore in till he is at a more average weight.
I'm aiming for 580grams and we'll see how we go from there.
I'm going to take a look at alternative Hills food, as that is high quality and doesn't smell. Maybe they have an cat diet version, I've seen the dog diet one around. Also go cat and tescos own brand seem popular on here so maybe try those too. Ill go shopping and take a look whats on offer tomorrow, with those helpful guidelines
What ever I use to mix I'm also going to change to using iams adult light "rich in chicken" as well.
53 eh? well I knew he was middle aged but that is getting on a bit, my old boy lol

Re: Fat Hog
Also after speaking to her my local vet is going to remove the lump, send it off for testing and check his teeth, all for a fraction of the price. Of course money isn't my main issue - i'm glad our own vet can treat him - but it sure helps!

Re: Fat Hog
mine are all fed on tesco premium, ive never had any problems with it and never had one overweight either
the vet saying an adult male should be 500-600g is not entirely true either, hogs vary so much, just because a hog is 300g or 700g doesnt mean theres anything wrong with it, they are all different and as long as they arent visibly over weight or visibly skinny then theres nothing to worry about.
obviously mr toffee is a bit of a porky having rolls of fat, the best way to combat that would be getting him on a lower fat diet, as rich said undr 10% fat is recommended. also cutting out the worms, mine only get them as a treat once a week, i only give more to mums with babies. mine also have crickets (i stun them first) and roaches (which they love) but again only as a treat every now and again.
they also get chicken or beef and also mince, only when we have it. none of mine like fruit or veg, occasionally they will eat peas and banana but not often, they do like scrambled egg.
as for blood work and checking teeth, i dont know its something i would worry about unless there was a problem.

Re: Fat Hog
Yeah he is def porky, it makes total sense now and I'm glad he's -sort of - allright. I was worried about the "swelling around his legs and across the back of his shoulders, i'm relieved is is just fat. Which is worrying itself but also good to know what it is and that it is fixable. *phew*
With that in mind maybe I wont go by his weight then and just keep him on a much lower fat diet with no worms intill he LOOKS better (on the back of his shoulders for example) and is back to his normal self, then put him on a regular low fat diet with some bugs (if he will have them) and a few wormy treats.

Re: Fat Hog
Mr Toffee has been on his new diet for a month and has lost the weight fast! He's now lost 100grams and weighs 580g. I am going to keep feeding him the same and start mixing in some iams so he gets a normal diet. In a couple of weeks I'll start up again with bug treats, crickets to start with then mealies. He is looking much better but as he still has some "spare tire" on the back of his neck so I'll leave it a bit longer (till he just looks better) before going back to treats and bugs.

Re: Fat Hog
I have been feeding him a mix 1/3 of his old food and 2/3 of hills diet adult cat food which only has 8% fat. I have just bought Tescos dry cat food and plan to mix the two new ones when his old food runs out in a week or so.
Mr Toffee is a much better size now and looks much healthier. He weighs 535grams and I have bought some crickets to start treating him again
If he reaches a plateau or gets down to 500grams I will buy some meal worms and go back to 3 a day - I'm sure he is very pleased to hear this

Re: Fat Hog
It is, he was fed on iams kitten food before I adopted him but I put in a mix of hills to keep the smell down
But that was way too high in fat, 14% which is why he put on so much weight. But hes doing fine now and we are back on track

Re: Fat Hog
Sorry if I appear rude - I'm a total newbie myself but I noticed you said you'd given your little hoggy tuna - I'd been told to steer clear of all fish things so I just wanted to check that out please? Is tuna okay for them or not? Thank you and like I said sorry if it appears to be rude, not intended at all

Re: Fat Hog
No its not
I read the information somewhere online (not the best source
) but found out that fish oil is bad for them hence no fish or fish flavour cat foods for our hedgehogs.
Lucky for me my hog is fussy and doesn't eat anything other than cat food and worms >_>
