hamster cage danger?
Hi there hog lovers, i m getting a new hedgie, and I am ding some research b4 buying, I have spoken to the breeder and he reckons hamster cages a dangerous as they have horizontal bars which hedgies can climb, this is dangerous because they can fall and break their leg, does anyone have anymore info? Any help would be great, does anyone else use and hamster cage? Have you had problems? Let me know

Most hamster cages that I have seen would probably be a little too small anyway. Something suitable for a guineapig would also be suitable for an APH. Many people use ZooZone syle cages, they have a solid plastic base, and a see-through plastic sides, with a metal opening on the top. They come in a variety of sizes. At the moment Pets at home are doing the large cage at only £39.

Re: hamster cage danger?
I use the indoor guinea pig cages that have bars around the side. The only time I have problems with any of them climbing is if I take brackens wheel off her she goes nuts. The bars on the nero type cages are alot wider apart than on hamster cages which I think may reduce the risk of them getting their leg stuck. It is possible to put a barrier around the bottom of the bars to make it hard for them to get to the bars to climb. I do make sure I check the cage regularly just in case but as yet have had no mishaps (fingers crosssed I never do).

i used to house mine i a nero cage, he used to climb the bars and his legs would slip out, then read someone else on here had an incident with their climbing which resulted in a broken leg, so i got a zoozone instead which is much better!

Re: hamster cage danger?
think most ppl use the sand as a litter tray under the wheel
but hogs can brake legs climbing the bars as well as young hogs been able to escape them and i had a adult get her head stuck between them,
so not worth the risk imo

Re: hamster cage danger?
I have a guinea pig/rabbit cage from Pets at home that is pink because I have girlie hogs. I was originally going to get a zoozone as suggested but all the ones in the store had been warped (maybe they had been kept to close to a heater or something?).
So I got the one with bars and my boyfriend bought some perspex and has cable tied a perspex buffer that is about 5 inches high to the inside of the bars so with the depth of the tray and then that they cant climb at all.
