Suitable cage and items for a 1st time APH owner

Post  Yummy_Mummy_77 on June 27th 2009, 7:02 pm

Hello

I am still researching as to whether to get a APH but i am wondering what kind of cage is suitable for 1 or 2 APH as i have read different things on the net wacko

I have a 4ft wide by 18 inches deep and 15 inches high wooden vivariumspare with glass fronted doors but read viv are not very good. I wondered what you all used?

Also what other items would i need and do you all recommend??

Thank you for any advice or tips!

Vicky

i personally use large zoozone cages or rabbit cages .... i have heard of people using viv but they have added extra ventilation to them ... x

I use vivs for my hogs and find them much easier to use than cages.

I basically have :-

  • a fleece lining on the bottom of the viv,
  • a poopie tray (a kitten one be fine),
  • an exercise wheel (flying saucer or silent spinner),
  • a ceramic water bowl,
  • a ceramic food bowl for dry cat biscuits,
  • a ceramic bowl for their tea time (cooked chicken, cooked mince, cooked veg like carrot and sweetcorn),
  • another bowl for their treats (mealies or dried crickets)
  • a teddy (nothing with plastic eyes etc, something a baby would be ok with)
  • a cat ball
  • a fleece lined pouch to sleep in
  • and mine have a little wooden landing level with steps up so they have more room.

Do you think a 2ft wide 15 inch tall viv would be sufficent for 1 hedgehog?? Otherwise it can be 4ft wide 15 inches tall but if that isnt suitable i will get a zoozone cage.

Thank you for the list that has really helped me to make a start as i think we have made our minds up to go ahead with buying one after our August hols!

The minimum size cage/viv for a hedgehog is 3ft in length Smile but 4ft would be fine, depending on how deep it is?

I use large zoozone cage and the 100cm ferplast one for rabbits. I have found if you provide a wheel for the hogs they tend not to climb?? My hogs are very happy in their cage too, but I do have a group of girls living together quite happily. They get on very well and share their wheels and food etc etc. My cage is very large though, its 150cm and very wide.

Thank you all cheers

I hope to get 2 Hedgies long term so will have one in our 4ft viv and will adapt to make plenty of ventilation and may change the doors to fine mesh as suggested too above and the other in a ZooZone cage.

Will definately keep them seperate as not worth the risk of stressing them or them fighting.

Ohhh it so very exciting reading up on them and something to look forward to in Septemeber! big smile
