Instructions on how to make a hedgehog bag. (Pic Heavy)
Hi All,
I have decided to make a post showing how to make a hedgie bag. It is better if you have a sewing machine as the seams will be neater and I have noticed that Sugar likes to have a dig while inside the pouch.
There are a few pictures but if you have any queries or comments for improvements please let me know, I will try and help where I can.
How to make a hedgehog bag
What you need to make a 9x10 bag:
Fleece material 26x11
Outer Material 21x11
Boning depends on opening. If opening is around 9 you may need 10 of boning.
Needle, thread and maybe pins
Sewing machine Thread the same colour as fleece.

Instructions
Fold the longer side of the fleece material in half so length equals 13 and width is 11. Fleece is usually identical on both sides but if it not ensure it is folded with the fleece layer on the inside.
Fold the longer side of the outer material in half but one side equals 11 and the other equals 10. Ensure the pattern is on the inside.
Line the outer material on top of the fleece so the folded edge matches.

(It is folded back to show where the opening is)
Next sew along the length edge on both sides. You can either tack with needle and thread or pins to ensure no slippage but I normally just free hand it.

If there is a lot of spare material on the edge next to the stitching this can be trimmed to about ½. This makes it easier to fold inside out.
Next the outer layer is going to be turned inside out. This will make the fleece be on the inside and the correct pattern of the outer material on the outside and there will be no seams on show.

We are going to sew on the boning.
The boning is used for support to help keep the opening open which makes it easier for hedgie to get in.
The outer material is longer on one side than the other. On this longer side we are going to sew on the boning. The boning is going to be sewn on the longer length material but at the same level as the shorter side. As you can see the boning has been sewed onto the outer material only and not the fleece.

To help keep the boning in place that spare inch is going to be folded over the boning and sewn along the length. The boning should be free moving under that fold of material.

The boning is going to be sewn on the other side to secure it in place. Its a case of using your judgment next. Slide the boning until it pushes the fabric up tight, but not so tight that it bulges (It makes its curve slightly). It should sort of lay flat against the material. Sew this down using the machine.

When you fold over the rest of the outer material it should look like this.

Next fold the fleece over and then tuck it under itself.

Sew along the fleece at the edge between the outer material.

Cut any loose threads off and you should have a completed hedgehog bag.

Wow that just looks far too complicated for me... think i'm with panther and will leave it to the experts at least till i get the hang of using a sewing machine, no doubt i would end up with a hedgie bag attached to my finger lol

I always give anything a try once!
You don't have to add the boning as I think thats the complicated part.

pouches
Hi Emdools,
I am new to this site, and new to hedge pigs!
I just wanted to say thanks for your post on how to make the pouch. I saw it this morning, and knocked up two in a couple of hours. Just hope Hoggy likes them.

I am happy that the tutorial has helped. You will have to post some pictures up when you get a chance!

My mum sews for a living, curtains, upholstry, cushions etc etc. She has a massive room in the garage dedicated to her sewing machine. I reckon if she read this she could show me how to do one.
I'm one of those people who needs to learn by watching someone else!
That or I could make my mum my own personal pouch creating slave hehe.

Do anyone know where you can buy the actual pouches? I've looked online but cannot find them and I certain cannot attempt to sew one. I'd end up sewing my finger to the fabric.
