worried he might be getting a bit fat

Post  fionac on June 18th 2010, 5:30 pm

I have been wondering for a while if Odysseus might be putting on weight. He seemed to be a bit rounder,a nd today I was holing him as he had been bleeding, I think from his toes again, last night, so was checking if he had any wounds or cuts. I noticed that he looked very round. I weighed him recently and he was about 450grammes, but I managed to drop the scales just before, and they fell apart, and I'm not entirely sure it was working properly afterwards. He weighed about 330 grammes I think a few weeks after I first got him, but about 6 months down the line he may have put on 100grammes if the scales are to be believed. He is about 9 months old now. He seems fine otheriwse, and I don't give him too many treats. He is a runner hog, so I've always made sure he had plenty of food in his bowl, as I assumed he was running it off overnight and would need the energy. I have noticed recently that he has been getting up in the day a few times, and then he eats a bit, goes to the toilet and then goes back to bed, so wonder if this has been putting weight on him. If I take a photo do you think it would be possible for anyone on here to tell if he looks a bit podgy. I fear I could just be worrying over nothing, but I'm worried that not taking notice of this could result in problems for his health, if he is overweight. He very rarely balls up, so it's not easy to tell if he can ball up, as I've read that is a sign. He has a live hopper every other day, and when I run out he has a few mealies, and the odd bit of chicken, maybe once every couple of weeks, or twice every two weeks. He has a bit of fruit every few days, and only small amounts.
I wondered if letting him have a very small amount of food during the day, and his usual amount at night might be better for him...though obviously I don't want to deprive him of food either.
Anyhow, any advice would be great, and if a photo could help I'll take and post a photo.

so long as he can still ball up and doesnt have fat rolls then its probably nothing to worry about.
450g isnt a massive weight for an aph and every hog is different so its hard to say if hes too big.
how about weighing a bag of sugar or something with a weight on it so you can see if the scales are right? big smile

Doh, never thought of the sugar thing. Thanks for that. blush
I don't think he has rolls of fat. He never stays still long enough to see to be honest, and he has the usual lose-ish skin around his tummy, but he won't stay still long enough for me to check he's not got more than he should. He's a lot bigger than he was. As lovely as it is to have one that is confident enough that he doesn't feel the need to ball up very often, it's a pain as at least if he balls up and has trouble I can guage it that way. I got up to check on him last night, and he must have seen me move while he was on his wheel and balled up and started hissing. His cage is covered over partly,. so I lifted that to check on him and he was on his back waving his feet in the air apparently having trouble getting up. To be fair, I think that the wheel was still rocking was causing hims trouble, and I knew if I put a hand in to help he'd just get annoyed, so I waited for him to right himself...whcih took some rocking back and forth before he could get back to his feet again. I'm not necessarilly sure that was a sign, as it could have just been the wheel was unstable. He just feels quite big and round at the moment. I don't give a lot of treats to him though, so don't think I've overfed him that way. I'll get bacl to the scales again though and keep a check on how much he increases. Thanks loads for that.
