Frozen crickets or dried?

Post  Tezrey on June 21st 2010, 9:32 pm

Hey guys,

I've recently tried my hoggies on live crickets, however i can't really say i partic like them jumping about when i try and get them out the box or get them with the feeding tongs.
So i was wondering is there much difference between frozen crickets and dried? (other than the obvious they are either frozen or dried)! hogbob

Any help or opinions would be great

i prefer the freeze dried ones you can freeze and so do my hogs - dried tend to be a little too dry lol - not sure on difference nutritionally though - I would suspect not an awful lot?

random opinion/brain dump

frozen has a higher water content, more filling, and more intact micronutrients and is easeir to digest as many of the cell walls will ahve broken during the freezing process.

dried. less filling but encurages drinking of more water, take more energy to digest as it needs to be rehydrated within the body before the nutrients in it can be broken down and adsorbed, slightly less vitamin content (dependiing on method of drying). dried has a higher %fat and protein - purely because there is less water though.

i'd imagine there is more varience form the life of the animal.. if they were fead healthier food, hih vitamin gut loading before killing etc that would sway me more than the means of keeping from going moldy.

for variety in the hogs life i'd chop and change between them, unless theres an obvious favorite taste wise. my chickens much prefer dried mealworms to prety much anything else on the planet, even live ones. no accounting for taste
